Alternate to static hydrotesting of API tanks

Depending on the size of the tank, an air test can be done to check for leaks. I would be confortable with this for large shop built tanks (>1000 BBL). I have also seen it done on tanks as large as (40' dia x 60' high). Sometimes a clean source of water isn't availible for a hydrotest and other...

    Algor Assembly Importing Problem

In Algor you can choose how the surface interact. You may have the default contact settings set so they are bonded. Look up contact in the Algor help.

    Choosing Time Steps

Does anyone have any tips on choosing time steps and other settings when doing Static Nonlinear analysis? Currently I have a large model of a tank using shell elements. I am using a nonlinear analysis because inside the tank their are large flat baffle that undergo an upset hydrostatic pressure...

temperature on the other side of fire wall

If you are doing spacing calculations to stop the spread of fire you are probably doing it wrong. Why are you doing this calculation.

    Steam boiler VS water boiler

Thanks for pointing that out David. Marcosdias, if your client has low requirements you probably have to look at the burner turn-down on the unit. You will still get the same amount of heat out of the unit, whether or not it is water or steam.

    Steam boiler VS water boiler

You can have superheated liquid. In order for liquid water to turn to steam it needs a somewhere for the production of steam to start know as a nucleation point. Typically nucleation points are foreign material to the water or air pockets. HOwever if you have very pure water you can heat liquid...

Water tightness errors really bug me. Any easy way to solve these?

In my expirience Algor doesn't like to mesh structural frames unless you do really fine meshes. This usually results in ridiculusly large models. You should really model this in Algor using beam elements.

    Bolting sequence

Thats very true. If you could have 4 guys starting 90 degress apart and moving counter clockwise. That way you would only have to mark the starting points.

    Building HRSGs at minus 50C

You may have issues with the refractory when you get below zero as well.

    Horizontal equipment on one saddle

You say changes are not allowed, but what about having two saddles back to back, and doing an analysis like that.

It demonstrates being able to have different colors for different features, but can it do different colours for differernt surfaces.

Ever built a shipable storage tank?

It sounds as though shipping it would be more expensive than field building the unit. You would need a very large and expensive crane, you would need to fully skid the floor so it did not collaspe, you would need large external rafters as to not cave the roof. It sounds way more expensive than...

    API 650 Tank NDTS

API 650 doesn't cover the design of rectangular tanks. For rectangular tanks I use good engineering practises to come up with tank wall thickness and stiffeners, then use API 650 weld procedures and inspection. It depends on the joint efficiency used. You can find that answer in Section 8 of...

Locally thickened shell area - Can you do it?

Keep the ID's the same, it should help with internal corrosion. Or if it is being coated there will be less prep work.
