The pull box will be situated under a raised GIS building on the Gulf Coast and buried. Ideally, we would like to go straight up through the lid to a building floor penetration.
What materials are available to make a watertight penetration through the top of a concrete pull box for a vertical run of cable tray? In practice, is it preferable to use PVC conduit with rubber pipe sleeves?
I am on a team designing a substation layout. We are trying to achieve a compact, economical arrangement. It has been proposed that a 3-transformer bay (or more) layout could be achieved with a drive path around the equipment; imagine an oval track around a small sub. I think it could be...
Thanks for the responses. I've worked in the industry for quite a while now. But as you can see I am a structural guy. I thought the insulating tape may discourage an arc from forming between the bus and vertical pipe because of the dielectric layering placed around the switch pipe. Is there any...
The company I work for has a client on the West Coast with a phase-to-ground clearance violation. On a 115kV deadend structure, the inside phase of rigid auxiliary bus just slightly violates the 42" phase-to-ground clearance requirement to a switch vertical operating rod. This was just recently...
Fellow Structural Engineers - This is a call for help. For the past 13 years I have designed structures using hot rolled steel and reinforced concrete. I now find myself with a unique career opportunity working for a startup with the goal of designing modular building systems framed with light...
An electrical engineer may select the transmission conductor to carry the maximum operating current. He/she may also perform a line impedance study or system load study.
A structural engineer would be responsible for design of the supporting transmission structures and foundations.
A PLS-CADD...
Thanks, glass99. You are right though. It is a smallish downtown city in the DFW metroplex so I have thought of that. I was half joking, half getting ahead of myself. Though the boss can be rough and the weekly grind just that, I plan to hold onto the steady income for some time until I've got...
Perfect, glass99!! Like I said in my original post I've done a little side work here and there in the last year. But today I just connected with a food franchise owner having issues with their leased building due to poor foundation construction. I think this job could go to litigation after I...
I would like to tease this out a little more. All the advice from guys who've taken this step is much appreciated.
So, without question, clientele is the most crucial piece to begin assembling the puzzle of consulting self-sufficiency. Is a shared office space or the like also an initial...
Thanks for the feedback, folks. Not trying to start an argument here. I see that wayyyy too often on this forum. Just trying to hear some others' experiences.
Thanks, RPMG, for the IBC reference. Thanks, Ingenuity for sharing a good perspective.
It sounds like my practice lies more or less...
I do provide a rebar schedule with length, size, and weight. I provide location of and required lap lengths. And, I provide schematics showing type and geometry of bent bars. So, the plan set is complete and can be fabricated and built directly from. All project are custom.
Do other structural engineers out there typically check the rebar shop drawings for a 3rd party contractor (different from in-house construction crew at a Design-Build or IPC firm) prior to construction? IMO, that is edging over the line of responsibilities. I have been doing this for an...
Thanks, gents, for all of the sage advice and encouragement.
It all sounds somewhat intimidating but you know what they say.. "without risk there is no reward." Probably a few others could be applied as well.
Merry Christmas, all!!
