    which plane?

when creating a new part in solid works it asks you to choose a plane in the assembly onto which to sketch. it is better to sketch parts on the parts planes or the assembly planes and why? what if i am doing a top down assembly and decide to update the assmebly drawings to which the part...

    part vs. assembly

heres what im trying to figure out. if i were to create a part and then import it into an assembly i could then move it around until i had mated it with another part. this can still allow for degrees of movement which in turn lets me reposition the part. Designing in context locks the part...

    Space frame chassis sweep?

SW 2005 is much kinder to those using weldments. 2004 dislikes streching profiles over more than one line at a time. If you have access to SW 2005, go for it.

    part vs. assembly

I would like to thank everybody for contributing in my moment of utter confusion. It has been very helpful.

    part vs. assembly

heres the real brain itch: this piston has to be able to move. therefore, is it better to create in context and keep it locked in place (using converted goemetry "on edge" for example) or to create each part separately and then use mates? Idealy i would like to have all parts in context for a...

    part vs. assembly

what if you have a piston, for example, which has referenced dimensions to a an engine in an assembly but you also want to use the same part in a diffenrt engine in another assembly. can you set up to use the same part or would they have to be two different part files?

    part vs. assembly

when creating a top down assembly I am often confused as to which plane to sketch on. I could choose a plane from the assembly or the part. Normally they coincude but sometimes they dont. Will one cause a problem. If i draw a part feature on an assembly plane can the part exist outside the...

    i can't move

thanks a lot guys. Im still a bit confused but ive gotten most of the kinks out of the model.

    i can't move

in the properties box it only gives me the option to use the default config even though i have created an second config in the config manager. I am still unclrear as to the true purpose of creating alternative config profiles and how this feature is properly implimented. The Help in Solidworks...

    i can't move

I have tried this, but I am uncertain as to how to go about doing this. Every time I have tried this I have been unsuccessful.

    i can't move

i think the problem is that im using the same sub-assembly (the hydraulic ram) twice. In the design there are two of these parallel to each other. When I delete one the error goes away. SW apparently doesnt let me use two of the same sub-assembly simultaneously unless thier ridgid. Is there...

    i can't move

I have set this sub-assembly to flexible but it gives me this error: hydraulic ram: Cannot have components with both rigid and flexible instances, or with multiple flexible instances. Please create new configurations for each flexible instance of this sub assembly. could someone explain this...

    i can't move

i have created a sub-assembly in which two parts are mated in such a ways where there is still movement along one axis. Upon importing this sub-assembly into a different assembly I lose this functionality. The sub-assembly can move but only as one complete unit. For clarification, the...

    come together

i have two parts that compliment each other, in that one of them is in a sence the area missing from the other. If I was creating a part i could use the combine feature to subtract one area from the other. In the assembly however i am having difficulty doing this since it is two distinct...
