Learning The FE Method - Any Advice?

Just as a follow up I decided to try out FEMAP with NX Nastran. It allows you to install a 300 node limted demo, which should be OK for me to play around creating simple models as described above and run some analysis. Thanks for all advice.

Learning The FE Method - Any Advice?

Sorry by 2D and 3D I mean plates and brick/pyramid/tet elements etc.

Learning The FE Method - Any Advice?

Yes thats what I was hoping to do. I've gone through bar and beam elements and have a reasonable grip on 3D Space Frame type analysis, and the componentns of the stiffness matrix for such problems. However Im moving on to 2D and 3D problems and the learning curves seems steep to me. Thanks for...

Learning The FE Method - Any Advice?

I will look into CalculiX. Bear in mind I am just trying to get as much backround learning now before going on the course, after which hopefully I will have a better understanding. Then perhaps after that I can go into more depth and look into how this method is used in industry.

Learning The FE Method - Any Advice?

I plan to attend the NAFEMS Practical FE course in March. Does anyone know if its any good? I'm a beginner with some experience but I really want to understand the basics of FE and not just how to use a piece of software (ie Femap Patran etc). I have a few books which have helped get me...

    FEA safety factors?

Is the NAFEMS site down? I cant access.

    Von Mises Vs Max Principle

kellnerp thanks for answer but what about the fact that derivation of vM assumes that the total strain energy is area under stress/strain curve that is proportional? the derivation following (Total Strain Energy - Hydrostatic Strain Energy) = Distortion Strain Energy. Thats is the only issue I...

    Von Mises Vs Max Principle

Hmm...Im still not seeing the applicability to ultimate failure. What does vMises physically mean when you are near fracture (to me failure = fracture, perhaops im not being clearer). Regardles, I found interesting discusion here. http://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=171174

    Von Mises Vs Max Principle

thread727-148480 Can someone explain the logic of using Von Mises for static failure (i.e. ultimate)? I thought it was only really useful for determining if yielding has occured. Once you get close to failure you're in the non-linear portion of the stress/strain curve, so is Von Mises still...

Fatigue: FEA (fatigue analysis at every node)

Yes thats looking likely, I will take the "dominant" principal stress.

Fatigue: FEA (fatigue analysis at every node)

dominat is largest magnitude principal stress? So for if a spectrum the dominant principal stress at node are 0,-10,0,25,65,0,-82,50,70,0 (10 cases) the vectors could all be different? I think I know how to rainflow to find the reversals, and add the damages together for each pair, but as above...

Fatigue: FEA (fatigue analysis at every node)

Thanks, however I was more concernd with the use of Principal streses. I may also looked at a number of cases, like maybe 10 instead of just 2. That is, my spectrum might contain 10 different load case. I guess I would need to just use Principal stresses becasue taking the difference might be...

Fatigue: FEA (fatigue analysis at every node)

thread727-156008 forgive my english, regarding using principal streses for fatigue analysis. If I have two FE cases, and suppose FEA based fatigue analysis will be caried out by cycling between these two cases. How would principal stresses be used? Does it matter that the principal vectors...
