B31.1 Distance between two adjacent buttwelds

Thanks for the excellent link! I've never heard of that website. I can't ask the client rep - I am the client. Tradesman is a Canadian term for a journeyman who belongs to an indentured trade such as welding or pipefitting.

    Stainless and ductile pipe connection

Try Victaulic Style 90 or 99 Plain end Couplings. I have used these to join ductile iron to carbon steel pipe on a gen-set cooling circuit running ethylene glycol at 200F.

B31.1 Distance between two adjacent buttwelds

Is anyone aware of a prohibition on the minimum spacing between two adjacent butt-welds in B31.1 Boiler External Piping? Do any of the ASME Codes restrict this spacing? My tradesmen tell me that 1-1/2 diameters is a rule of thumb, but that seems pretty excessive.

    Structural Steel Detailing Manual

Thanks swearingen - I found a used book dealer that has the whole three volume set so I ordered it. I already have the 1983 AISC "detailing for steel construction", but it doesn't have much "detail"!

    Structural Steel Detailing Manual

Very Funny. Does the image appear to you? I just see a box with a red X in it. When you right-click the box and select "properties" it shows you the link.

    Structural Steel Detailing Manual

Can anyone identify the manual from which I found this one page?

    Condensate storage tank material suggestions

We have several large condensate storage tanks here at our combined-cycle power plant. They are all steel construction, lined internally with an epoxy coating. Carboline has several good products. Your condensate looks pretty innocuous. Stainless is overkill, and fantastically expensive to...

    Richardson rapid construction cost system

I once (10 yr ago) used the Richardson manuals for cost estimating process piping installation costs. I did a google search today and can't find any hits for Richardson Engineering Services. Anyone know what happened to them? Is there an alternative manual (other than Means) that people would...

    Diesel Fuel Additive

I have searched the entire eng-tips site, and can't find any posts on this. I am reviewing a diesel fuel additive pitch (very skeptically) for a product that supposedly can reduce NOx and PM as well as increase efficiency. It dices, it slices, it makes Julian fries. The dosage rate is very...

    Laser Tape Measure

I use a Hilti laser rangefinder. It's a little hard to use in bright sunlight but is quite accurate.

Threaded Fittings in Burst Pressure Calcs

Try the "Machinery's Handbook" which should be in Section 621.8 of any decent library.

Threaded Fittings in Burst Pressure Calcs

I would think that deducting the depth of the threads from the nominal wall thickness (minus the 12.5% tolerance) would give you a conservative burst pressure. Since the threads are tapered, the deepest threads are actually at the very ends of the pipe where they are restrained in the radial...

    tanks in cold ambients

Don't bother with ABSA - their jurisdiction is pressure vessels, not atmospheric storage tanks. For what it's worth, one US Arctic mine I have worked with uses SA516-70 normalized plate for outdoor oil storage tanks. An Arctic Canadian mine specified: "Material shall be in accordance with CSA...

    Exterior Steam Piping

We operate in Canadian winters with steam lines, some 600# and some 100#. Slope steam mains to drain boots which are trapped to the condensate line. We use mineral wool on low pressure, cal sil on high pressure. The condensate lines should be insulated and steam traced with stainless tubing...
