Hi,
I have the same book on my shelf too!!!its a brilliant book and as you say there are only about 800 pages.
what the website indicated to be 1700 pages might be design data hand book. It would be the one with design-tables and design-data for various applications.
cheers

Hi,
It has developed into a real interesting problem. Like all, I too dont have any solutions. However you could rule out clamping errors by checking with another material like aluminium. You could also do a tensile test to ascertain the young's modulus, if you dont have the resources, can you...
I completely agree with greg. The plate/beam might have had plastic deformation. Once it has become plastic the bending equation does not hold good. A good check would be to load the beam in steps and see if the load vs. deflection curve is linear, If its not , you have a problem.
All the best
consider the chimney as a cantiliver beam of varying cross section. Solve and draw a Bending moment Diagram. you can tehn find the bending moment with respect to the base. Its a text book problem with complicated wordings. Any book on 'Strength of materials' should help you

Hi,
there are quite a few journal articles on the wind profiles of truck-trailers. If you search in the 'Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics' you should come across some interesting research work.
One of the most active scientist is C.J. Baker.
A book by Hucho 'Aerodynamics...
This is just a check. Have you connected the strain guages in a bridge with 2 active arms or 4 acitve arms or with just the one active arm? depending on how you have connected it you will need to make suitable adjustments to the aquisition system(if it outputs strain directly), if you read just...
