Opinions on "Heat to Fit" Piping Practices

RMW, I agree completely. It can be done right the first time. I'm currently building skidded packages myself, and when there are competent installers in the field, everything will bolt up without rosebuds or hammers. When something doesn't align properly, our normal course of action is to...

    Painting before hydrotest

Our AI asked us not to paint and joints before he can witness the hydrotest. He said we could paint the shell prior, but we saw no point in painting part, only to come back and paint the rest later. Ultimately, it would be up to your customer, but I would check with your AI to make sure he is...

    Welding of tread joints

I would have to dig around for a specific reference in the books, but it is permissible to seal weld threaded joints. This is only for sealing. The code does not allow any added strength to be assigned to the joint. We commonly seal weld 2" NPT joints on temporary NG compression lines using...

    Splitting Force of Wood

Sorry to get off-topic, but could someone enlighten me as to a formula to determine the force generated by a regular ol' splitting maul? I know I would need weight of the maul and most likely the velocity.

Opinions on "Heat to Fit" Piping Practices

I feel that tolerances in alignment and temperature would have to be clearly defined and closely followed. Also, it would probably be good idea to define the differences between "heat to fit" and heat treatment for stress relief.

Question with no good answer (code related)

The wells are onshore and under the jurisdiction on the Texas Railroad Commision, and they offer no direction in designing piping systems.

Question with no good answer (code related)

I've been tasked with helping standardize flowlines on natural gas wellsites. No code seems to step up and claim this area in it scope, though B31.8 expressly excludes the lines from the wellhead. The lines will be from Wellhead to Separator to TOC meters. Our best consensus is B31.3. Has...

NDE goof up discovered. Major problem??

Thank you for the input. I assumed there would be a simple solution :)

NDE goof up discovered. Major problem??

Our inspection contractor has created a small issue for me. The reports for X-Ray on a few occasions list the wrong code. We build almost all of our equipment to ASME B31.3. We also shoot at least twice the number of required shots per code. They have listed their RT procedures for API 1104 two...

Constructive advice on a different method of pipe connection.

I like the design. I like to think of flanges as the best device we have, not the best device, for connections. Hopefully this could be marketed and become available for widespread use. I just completed a project on natural gas production equipment and during hydro test we found 1 in 5...

    Code stamp contract

The owner of the stamp is assuming liability for the vessel being manufactured. This could present some sticky situations.

API 1104 vs. ASME Section 9

you can disregard the statement about the drawing. it occured to me that you might be creating the drawing. sorry, i'm on the construction end of the oilfield, so i'm used to drawings being completed long before i get involved :)

API 1104 vs. ASME Section 9

API 1104 throughout. Drawings should dictate where the spec change should be made. you should not start to worry about section IX until you reach a processing facility or some form of packaged equipment piping.

    Stud bolt torque specifications

I'm having trouble locating any sort of torque specs for B7 studs used on raised face flanges. can someone point me in the right direction?
