A follow on question, for full floating piston pins, what is the relative movement/lubrication conditions between the piston pin boss, the pin and the small end bearing. From observation the existence of an oil hole in the small end bearing and none in the piston pin boss holes suggests that...
Interested in the opinion of others as to the practically, and suitable materials, for the manufacture of bushes to be inserted into a piston pin boss to allow use of a smaller piston pin. Hoping to adapt a piston with 16mm pin to a crankshaft with 14mm pins. Initially thought bronze to be a...
Planning to electroless nickel plate the inside surface of an aluminum tube. Want to paint the outside surface. Apparently more economical to plate the complete tube than mask to outer surface. This raises the question, can electroless nickel be painted and if so which paint types will...
The lack of quantified "performance improvement" is the reason for my questions. I have been unable to find any comparative performance measurements, just opinions from both the product suppliers and positive endorsement from customers that has paid out $200-$500, depending on the coating...
Thanks coatingengineer, if I understand your comments correctly the friction/wear performance of (1) PTFE coated bush against chrome and (2) PTFE coated bush against aluminium are the equal of that available from the alternatives I have listed.
This would support my suspicion that the...
Would any friction reduction from the increased harness of anodized aluminium, when sliding against a PTFE coated bush, be worth the cost of the anodizing. Also, if PTFE coatings offer excellent low friction properties, why would these coated bushes wear the untreated aluminium to any...
Hoping for an explanation as to the advantages of low friction/wear surfaces on motorcycle fork legs. Current designs have PTFE coated bushes working with hard chromed steel and aluminium tubes, in an oil environment.
Marketing claims are made for significant improvement in wear and friction...
Hoping for an explanation as to the advantages of low friction/wear surfaces on motorcycle fork legs. Current basic designs have PTFE coated bushes working with either hard chromed steel or aluminum in an oil environment.

Overbore to improve mid-range power as a road bike and an engineering exercise.
There is an big bore piston package that makes 444cc with a re-bore but there are questions as to the reliability of boring the original liners this large. At best would leave perhaps 1.5mm of the original cast-in...
Reflecting on everyone's comments regarding re-sleeving the original cylinders or plating, I have decided that a wet sleeve with a top flange supported by the existing outer water jacket is my goal. Basically an open deck to closed deck conversion.
Although ductile iron is apparently...
Back again with more questions. Having digested the views expressed in this thread, I have had a rethink on this subject and was wondering if a better solution would be to bore out the OEM cast in liners and then nikasil coat the remaining aluminium bore, as the new running surface for the...
BigClive, it is the first of the oz holden V6s and yes they are not the quietest of engines. However this particular noise appears to be associated with knock retard by the ecu that I get during auto up changes.
The knock retard issue has probably highlighted the noise and I would ignore it...
Optimistically, was hoping to have high level of confidence that cam chain was the problem before having to delve into the motor. Lot of work to get to the chain and find it is not the problem.
Unknown mileage on the chain but believe it to be in excess of 70,000km. It is a V6 Buick engine...
Interested in experts opinions as to likely source of engine noise that only occurs between gear changes.
My suspicion is that it is cam chain/tensioner noise when the load comes off the engine. It is a thrashing sound that is not noticeable during normal steady state running.
The ALDL data...
Pat, had not contemplated modifying or moving the water holes. Was going to use a head gasket with same hole size/pattern just larger bore size. Issue will be that larger bore will reduce sealing area between bore and water holes. How small can the area be before I run the risk of gasket...
