API 650 and ASCE 7-16 and 7-22 Wind Loading Updates

ASCE 7-16 and 7-22 have some pretty significant changes to wind loading on tanks, see below: ASCE 7-16 Updated wind speed maps Ground elevation factor Significantly updated section for bins, silos and tanks Including large increases in the force coefficient (Cf) for tightly spaced groups of...

    API 650 13th Edition Addendum/Technical Inquiries Updates?

It's odd that we haven't seen an addendum for the 13th Edition of API 650 yet after 5 years. Typically we'd have seen 2-3 addendums and possibly a whole new edition by now. Any idea what's going on with the committee? Also, no updates to the Technical Inquiries have been made since 2019...

Half above / half below floor drain

mk3223, Thank you for the input. Are you referring to the under bottom connections detailed in Annex O? JStephen, I've heard of the eccentric reducer style as well. Any specifics on what you'd classify as a low stress tank? Maybe <0.5*Sd in the tub ring?

Half above / half below floor drain

Hello, The attached sketch shows a drain style where half the pipe penetrates the shell above the floor and the other is half below and penetrates through the floor. I'm aware this detail is not included in API 650, but is fairly commonly used in the industry. Any thoughts on what tanks...

API 650 Flush-Type Cleanout and Shell Connection Supporting Research

Hello, In many parts of API 650, footnotes have been added to show which papers and research formed the basis for the equations given. However, nothing is provided for Flush-Type Cleanouts and Shell Connections. Is anyone aware of any paper(s) or research that the API 650 Flush-Type Cleanouts...

Stability of API Standard 650 Tank Shells, McGrath

I'm not a student, so I can't take the volume home but they said I could scan as much as I want on site. My guess is that I can send it to another engineer, but I'll check and if so, I'll gladly send it to you.

Stability of API Standard 650 Tank Shells, McGrath

Thank you for the responses. IFR's - Heads up, just found API Bulletin 2U on Techstreet.com and there's a 3rd edition out in 2004. Just bought it. JStephen - Luckily the U of M library by me has the "Proceedings of the American Petroleum Institute,1963, Vol. 43" in high density storage...

Stability of API Standard 650 Tank Shells, McGrath

Does anyone have or know where one could find R.V. McGrath, “Stability of API Standard 650 Tank Shells,” Proceedings of the American Petroleum Institute, Section III— Refining, American Petroleum Institute, New York, 1963, Vol. 43, pp. 458 – 469? I've searched high and low and this one is...

AWWA D100 vs. API 650 Roof Design (Specifically unbalanced snow loading)

That's still part of the latest AWWA D100-21 and I've always wondered why they have that limitation. Wish they gave background on some of these rules.

AWWA D100 vs. API 650 Roof Design (Specifically unbalanced snow loading)

Hoping the experts can clear something up for me. I think we can agree AWWA D100 is generally a more conservative design standard when compared to API 650. So I'm wondering why there's such a large difference in roof design with API 650 being more conservative. API 650 requires roofs to be...

Using Mathcad for API 650 Design, Slows to a Crawl

Originally I had an issue where my Documents folder was redirected to the server and for whatever reason (Mathcad support would not say), I would come into work the following morning and my Mathcad file size would be 0kb with the file corrupted and unrecoverable. After that I've had my Mathcad...

Using Mathcad for API 650 Design, Slows to a Crawl

Thanks for the input and tip. However, even though that helps, the file is still extremely slow. I also disable areas until I need them. Did you or are you planning to switch to a different software?

Using Mathcad for API 650 Design, Slows to a Crawl

I had kind of forgotten that I brought this issue up to Mathcad over a year ago and since I haven't heard back on the file I sent them, I'm going to make the assumption that there isn't anything particularly wrong with my file and it's just the way the program currently runs. With this new...

Using Mathcad for API 650 Design, Slows to a Crawl

I had a hunch you were using Mathcad 15 and I don't blame you, as far as I've heard it's a much faster program. I've unfortunately written the program in Mathcad Prime 8.0. I may take you up on your offer to review my file, but do you have the capability to open/view a Mathcad Prime 8.0 file...

Using Mathcad for API 650 Design, Slows to a Crawl

Thank you for the responses. IFR, the fact that your API 650 Mathcad design program works without bogging down is great to hear, especially since you seem to have more details of the code built in. I currently have Mathcad techies looking into why mine runs so slow. I have a few questions...
