I'm not one for significant numbers either. However, I'm told we need to have a little intelligence in the numbering scheme. So the first example is what I came up with. I would rather go to one model that has all my configurations and descriptions for that piece of hardware instead of...
Have a meeting in 2hrs to discuss part numbering and models. Which numbering method / solidworks model configuration would you like better:
WST-1000 (MAIN WELDSTUD PART NUMBER AND MODEL)
WST-1000-1 1/4-20 X .50"
WST-1000-2 1/4-20 X .75"
WST-1000-3 10-32 X .50"
WST-1000-4 10-32 X 1.0"

Updraft- Totally agree on the paint. I'm one that is saying just use an excel sheet in the drawing to call these variations out....add and change using that.

GWUBS- I agree. Here's what someone at work wants to do. We design enclosures. These enclosures might have different doors, some get different rainshields, different amounts of fans, ect. Even different paint colors (so he wants to make dummy models of the paint so they pop up in the bill of...
Don't get me wrong I use configurations of parts and some simple assemblies. The "physical" aspects of configurations is great in SW. But the Configured BOM part, I find just becomes a headache to maintain.

We don't manufacture here we have vendors make our enclosures for us. All prints require a BOM in engineering here. In my opinion the Config. BOMS work ok for something small, but when you get into the larger assemblies and variations 1.) It takes up a lot of space on a drawing sheet, 2.) They...
How many people out there use configured bills of material in Solidworks with assemblies containing 10 parts or more? What's people's opinion of using configured bills of material in Solidworks?

yep they won't sell us just the latches because we are also an enclosure manufacturer. They want us to either buy their cabinet or have them make our cabinets for us. We get better pricing through some of our other sheetmetal vendors then Hoffman.

I'm aware of the ratings and what they equal. However we need to buy an off the shelf latch that has been listed by UL all ready. Otherwise we have to pay for the testing of the latch design we come up with.

In the UL508A guidline for Industrial Control panels, section 22 discusses barriers used with ventilation openings. If anyone is familar with this standard, section 22.4 reads "A barrier of polycarbonate shall be at least .125" thick. A NONMETALLIC BARRIER OTHER THEN POLYCARBONATE SHALL BE AT...
Anyone know of an off the shelf quarter turn latch that is rated/passed UL Type 3R or Type 12 rating?

Matt and Chris both have it right. And that's what I wanted to make sure, as I write our company "standards" as well. Thanks guys!

EWH- The problem with "standards" is that they don't get updated as new technology comes into play! Some of the ANSI standards still talk about drawing in layers, line types, line weights ect......well if you are still in those dark ages then ya, live and die by those standards I guess.

Ok here's an example of what I'm talking about. I'm saying there's no reason for a BOM on this print. Item 1 would be obvious, item 2 would be the pemnuts of course. In the title block we give material to made from, but I have deleted the title block from the picture. We send this out to be...
MadMango- I am talking about purchased vs. manufactured. We don't manufacture parts, we engineer them and buy them. We use SAP, we do control our documents in there and materials. HOWEVER, I don't control weldstuds, pemnuts, ect that are used by the vendor to make my parts. I think you and I...
