    Does a P.E. increase experience?

I appreciate it. So many fish jumping in the boats. Trying to make my scales stand out.

    Does a P.E. increase experience?

I recently passed the Principles and Practice portion in NY. I have mixed experience including over 2 yrs site / storm, 1 yr of grad school, and 1.5 yrs structural (although most would label it as geotechnical). I took the geotechnical afternoon portion. What kind of experience level geotech...

    Drilled Pier with Frost Depth

Neglect 3 ft frost depth? Are you advised to be more conservative or liberal in your design?

    Long Tie-rod Bond Length

Looking at the PTI for Rock and Soil Anchors Commentary section C6.7.1-7.2, I read that bond lengths for rock should be limited to 35 ft. While in soil, the limit is 50 ft. The reason is "inefficiencies". The inefficiencies I thought up were in the construction process as result of economic...

    This weekend's exams.

Ha! Yeah. Sorry about that. Every Mid-April and Mid-October the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying holds exams for Training and Licensing. How is it outside the States? I have a buddy in Sweden and he told me there is no licensing for engineers there.

Good luck to everybody taking them!!

Career Shift from Structural Engineer to Surveyor

I am kind of like you. I started out in surveying and went into site/civil engineering. I did not like it and the people in the private development business were really pushy. All the projects I came across were condos, shopping malls and Wally-Worlds. It did not register as Civil to me...

    Growth Factor

Anyone know of a good reference to look up for finding Growth Factors to calculate ESALs? Probably something from AASHTO or maybe something else. I am pretty clueless with traffic. Anything on the Internet? Thanks,

Bearing Capacity on the PE Exam.

Yeah me too. Saturated Gamma minus 62.4! That's how I learned it in Undergrad and Grad. We never made correction for overburden, but I understand that part. I get these study books and my answer for bearing capacity is closer to the wrong answer than the correct one. I hope the correct...

Bearing Capacity on the PE Exam.

My question: Is using the dry unit weight to subtract 62.4 good practice to calculate for the surcharge term in the Bearing Equation?

    Re: Pile Socket

I know rock sockets from drilled pier construction. Usually, you get the depth to competent rock and the structural engineer tells you the load to counter with. Knowing the compressive strength of the rock and concrete-bedrock bond stress, a socket depth is dictated for skin friction and end...

Bearing Capacity on the PE Exam.

I am studying up on for the April 16, 2010 Exam. I have the Civil Engineering Ref Manual 10th ed. and the 6 Minute Solutions: Geotechnical. For a problem with the GWT between the surface and the foot base, The CERM advises to subtract 62.4 from the dry unit weight before multiplying by the...

Mat Foundation price: 2 Story dwelling.

I saw a Post-Tensioning video on the HGTV website. They do a good job of selling it. Myself, I was thinking of the grade beam method. Having shallow footings at the walls and columns with it being thinner everywhere else. Shopping around is the thing to do. Right now, I just don't believe...

Mat Foundation price: 2 Story dwelling.

Sorry about that. Yes. It is a basement footing. Are house foundations usually always a shallow mat type? I have yet to come across a dwelling on a deep or special foundation. What percentage of the total price should the foundation be?
