    Masonry Development Length

Thanks Steve for the info. I agree that for smaller diameter bars (i.e. #4 or #5) centered in a masonry wall have reasonable development lengths. However, we design a lot of retaining walls where we end up with larger bars (#6 or #8) located closer to the edge for moment capacity. This results...

    Masonry Development Length

The IBC 06 (or in my case the 2007 CBC) refers to ACI 530 for masonry design. ACI 530 gives a formula for development of bars in tension (2.1.10.3) that seems to yield some extremely long development lengths. Has anyone else ran into this issue? Any thoughts?

Proper Way of labeling Batter Behind Retaining Wall

I agree with BigH to always just put in the H and V. In my experience it is usually H:V, however when I did a project that happened to be in metric units it was V:H. Also a graphical indication of the slope is acceptable.

    Drilled Pier Minimum Steel

I have an interesting question. There has been some discussion among engineers I know on what the minimum steel requirements should be for a cast-in-drilled-hole concrete foundation for something that takes high lateral loads (and very little axial load), such as a light pole foundation, or a...

    Geogrid with Boulder Retaining Wall?

Our firm has designed many "rockery" walls (as we call them) with geogrid reinforcement and they can be very effective where the walls heights are between 6' and 20'. I have been with this firm for less than a year and since the housing market has dropped, I have not had a chance to personally...

    Hand Pump - odd question

I know this may be an odd question and unrelated to engineering, but I am looking for a hand pump (similar to a bicycle pump) that has both intake and outake ports. I want to hook up some hoses and pressurize a small vessel with something besides air (any type of gas). I have seen a pump like...
