    Stainless steel welding

    GTAW (TIG) would be best. Thoriated electrode with pure argon shielding gas, purge the back of the weld as well. DC current. This method is slow but excellent weld properties. For reasonably small jobs. For large welds/jobs I agree with last post by Ron.

    Advise on Butt Welding Mild Steel

    1-1.5mm wall pipe can be arc welded, use as small a rod as possible 1.6 - 2.5mm, and low amps. The secret is practice, practice, practice!!!. No don't grind off the excess weld as it will crack. You can neaten it up if required though. Good luck Gary

    Problems with metal stains, etc.

    What type of alloy are you using? Some types of non weldable s/steel have too much carbon in them. Could it be carbon, untouched by the acids, that you see?. How big are the particles? How well attached are they?. Is the surfactant correct for this acid?, this could be breaking down to carbon.
