Well I think I know what was wrong, because when I put in the new subassembly I did not fully constrain it.
I just so to say dump it into the assembly.
I have now fully constrained the sub assembly and it seems to work.
I am now able to auto explode.

Normally if you zoom in or out the size of the dimension changes automatically.
For example when you zoom out, the dimension size gets bigger so it stays readable.
