    Vertical friction on Retaining Wall

Concrete is 'cheap' and it helps me sleep better than friction does. Just add more concrete. To answer your question, no I have never seen anyone use it, nor have I ever considered using it.

    Work Life Balance (update)

Why buy a house somewhere that you are unhappy. Start looking for a job in a new location, maybe a bigger cutter. Chicago and Minneapolis aren't 'too' far away.

    LFRD and ASD

    I think 0.6*DL + 1.0*WL actually has a physical meaning, unlike 0.9*DL + 1.6*WL for overturning.

    Truss

Are you sure you are dealing with a truss? Loads should only be applied at joints, and all members should be pin connected; this should alleviate your problem if I understand it correctly.

Foundation on equivalent soil mass bedrock within a slope.

Bedrock can become weathered and decomposed. At one extreme, severely weathered rock no longer has any rock properties and is soil. A geotechnical engineer needs to decide if the bedrock is poor rock or if the underlying stratum is soil.

Maximum Post Spacing for Decorative Railing

    Mu = 50 plf *14.7^2 * 12 / 8 = 16.21 k-in Zx = 1.25 * 2.5^2 /4 = 1.95 in^3 M_allow = 36/1.67 * 1.95 = 42 k-in > 16.21 k - in Looks like you are okay!!!! But I am confused, is the 6" pipe your handrail or your guardrail? It is too big to be a handrail. I have never used the term "Kick bar"...

    Civil-Structural PE Questions

No comment on #1, other than if you can answer the questions in SDRM then you will probably do fine on the structural portion of the PE. Remember, it is nearly August - you have less than three months to study. #2 Get the correct code. There are some things that are different between 13th and...

    starting salary

Why pay them? Just emphasize how you are helping them: Link But more seriously, recent NYC starting salaries were around $60,000 - 67,000. Other (non big city) places were closer to the $50,000 to 56,000 range. Personally I would have thought the $50,000 was low, but the place offered a ~15%...

    PE Exam Review Courses

My company pays for one pair of steel-toed boots every year. My current 2.5 year old pair is still doing fine. They also will buy me dinner and drink(s) when I am away from the home office, but I usually only expense for the food and pay for my own drinks. Now that my side tangent is out of...

Prandtls's bearing capacity theory Vs Terzaghi's bearing capacity theory

Thank you sro2ck, I had actually never known of Prandtls theory before. Luckily a simple google search taught me that it was different from my home-boy Terzaghi's theory by the simple relationship of...wait noooo...UFO, I am not ready to be abducted...I was just about to explain the difference...

Silo loading on Structural Analysis Software

Why is there a vertical pressure on your elements? Is your silo cylindrical? conical? upside-down conical? Are you referring to frictional down drag? Are you referring to the the vertical pressure from the granular material inside the silo? If you clarify these questions I may be able to...

Ref books for nonlinear structural analysis?

I came across a bunch of aerospace course pages a few weeks ago trying to find a resource on plain strain. I do not know the quality of this resource, but here is a link to a nonlinear FEM course with an Ebook (I believe the ebook is written by the aerospace faculty at University of Colorado...
