What boundary condition techniques do you use to keep FEA models realistic?

Thanks FiniteMatt. I appreciate the advice as it's what I was looking for. It seems to me that boundary conditions are really important in representing a real life structure. From my class I understood that one needed to perform multiple studies to see what was a more realistic model.

How did you develop engineering intuition and grow into a strong problem solver?

Thanks for the example IRstuff! I think I'm talking about the latter as a goal, while the basic knack is more what this post is about. I've met a few people who fit that second level you mentioned, and it's really impressive and admirable. Their ability to trust their gut and make suggestions is...

How did you develop engineering intuition and grow into a strong problem solver?

Thanks SWComposites. I'm thinking that I'd need to work on a development program from start to finish to see my actions unfold and learn from my decisions and consequently mistakes. If there's any testing that would help as well.

What boundary condition techniques do you use to keep FEA models realistic?

Hello all, I work in the aerospace industry as a stress engineer. I recently took a very solid aerospace FEA course as part of a master’s program, and one thing I really appreciated was how the instructor emphasized connecting numerical approximations to real-world behavior. Around the same...

How did you develop engineering intuition and grow into a strong problem solver?

Hi all, I’m currently a stress engineer working on aircraft interiors. I’m fairly new to this kind of work but I worked on MRB stress of primary metallic structures before this primarily driven by hand analysis by extracting loads from a FEM. A lot of the FEA I do is coarse loads modeling to...

Modeling Spring Elements (CBUSH, CELAS) in Patran

Hi everyone, I work in aircraft interiors, and we often ask our suppliers to validate their FEMs using a simplified box model with floor beams that represents a galley. I mainly review their stress reports, where they reference FEM data, through hand analysis, and interface loads review through...

Mastering FEA: How to Get Through Stage 2 (Developing Good Modeling Techniques)?

@SWComposites: I could see how you learn by doing and making mistakes. @rb1957: Thanks for response. I hear that beams are some of the more complex elements.

Mastering FEA: How to Get Through Stage 2 (Developing Good Modeling Techniques)?

Hey everyone, I recently picked up a book by Dominique Madier titled Practical Finite Element Analysis for Mechanical Engineers, and one key takeaway is that mastering FEA involves three stages. First, learning the theory—understanding the math, governing equations, and physics behind finite...

How can I achieve mastery in a stress engineering role working in the aerospace industry?

@IRstuff, you bring up good points. I did my share of presentations when I was a designer also at Boeing with PDRs and CDRs related my projects. I actually got good at presenting but it has been a while since I presented to a large audience due to the nature of my work now. Maybe it'll come...

How can I achieve mastery in a stress engineering role working in the aerospace industry?

Hey guys, when I used the word wealth, it was to put things into perspective. It was more of The Millionaire Next Door type of wealth, if you've ever read that book, so think making a comfortable living with a rewarding job and living under your means. I wasn't seeking a salary as a software...

How can I achieve mastery in a stress engineering role working in the aerospace industry?

@CWB1 and Heaviside1925, you guys bring up some good and interesting points. I'm definitely going to explore this.

How can I achieve mastery in a stress engineering role working in the aerospace industry?

@Heaviside1925 Thanks for your response. When I used the word mastery, I wasn't really speaking literally. Galloway's statement is just something that made me think. I listen to a variety of people so I don't have my views set on what he says. I actually disagree with many of his statements but...

How can I achieve mastery in a stress engineering role working in the aerospace industry?

@IRstuff You bring up a very good point. This is something I need to work on even more. I took out student loans while in my undergrad career and I'm still paying those off. Also, I come from a family of immigrants and my dad left me with some debt before he passed away. I don't want to get into...

How can I achieve mastery in a stress engineering role working in the aerospace industry?

@GregLocock So, in my company, most engineers cap at around 165k give or take (level 4). That's where I see most making the same. A few are able to up to the higher level engineering roles (level 5 or 6) that would pay them over 200k. With that said, I'm starting to see a handful of engineers...

How can I achieve mastery in a stress engineering role working in the aerospace industry?

Thanks guys. Sounds like I want to stay in the group until I become proficient but move to another group working on development or leave to another company.
