yeah, i last read that paper in 2006, so er, yeah, read it again last night :)
i guess the problem is we've got our intake reasonably optimised, and the bell design is a fixed factor we have to work with.
i guess an annular step in the bell could be worth experimenting with (use an insert in...

greg, thats my website (and my busted bellmouths) ;) hehe
and i too have no idea what bill is talking about on that occasion.
im less concerned at the moment with the intake efficiency as thats pretty sorted, but by crikey it makes some noise. on a dyno you can hear the intake work through...
cheers steve, greg.
i read that paper quite some time ago for another reason, and didnt remember it covering acoustic radiation? me needs to go fid that one back out and have another look.
if the coeff is close to 1, id hate to think how loud these pipes would be if it were any worse!
Heya folks, i have done a chunk of research (not my field!), and am having trouble relating the infomation im reading back to my specific query... which is:
regarding... the delicate balance between reducing the pumping losses by applying a bellmouth to a duct termination, and at the same time...

yeah, i know that arguing the finites of intake design is a small peble in the whole engine, but its been an academic argument among friends so far, and its got us all chewing our nails.
i do agree that I expected the mach limitations on the two types of inatkes to be the same.
so the question...
ok, problem is we've done some calcs, as well as studied a few built engines with known paramteres (both NA andFI)
the results have suggested that the manifold velocities are getting 'very' high on the FI engines, and the torque and peak power positions on the RPM axis do not seem to relate to...
Hi Folks,
my own thoughts on this topic, and some others discussion have stalled... and thus, i open the floor to you guys.
basically I have no argument with the conventional numbers of manifold port and valve throat peak airflow velocities (in NA engines), and their relationship to rpm and...
( I originally posted this in the automotive section, but i think this forum is more appropriate. please see thread71-166172 )
Ive just been reading a few articles, in particular:
Wave reflections from duct terminations
A. Selamet and Z. L. Ji
and
The acoustics of racing engine intake...
yeah, ive tended to go with larger r/D to improve the loss coefficient and improve flow capability. an example of my bellmouths can be seen below:
http://www.v-eight.com/images/Images_Forum/ITB_Manifold_Aug5.jpg
but with further reading, perhaps such a lareg bell is a bad idea for acoustic...
and secondly, and something i have not found much to read about myself, what would the effect of the introduction of a pulse plate overlying the bellmouth be?
Just been reading a few articles, in particular:
Wave reflections from duct terminations

and
The acoustics of racing engine intake systems

now ive typically designed my intake runners to terminate (either within an airbox, or atmosphere)...
