Steel Beam Sitting on an Existing 6" CMU Wall

@kipfoot I wish that you analyzed a simple beam before making a bold statement like " never true " -- Alright, have a simply supported beam and apply 100 plf DL, 120 plf LL uniform load on it. You will find out that the smallest wide flange that you can use is W 5x16, and the lightest HSS...

Steel Beam Sitting on an Existing 6" CMU Wall

@OldBldgGuy Most of the time weights of W sections equivalent in stiffness to HSSs are almost identical plus you do not need to deal with bracing your flange with HSS members.

Steel Beam Sitting on an Existing 6" CMU Wall

Hi Folks, I do not want to generate a high compressive stress on an (e)6" cmu wall for that reason instead of having my HSS 10x4x1/2 beam sit with an end bearing plate on the (e) 6" cmu wall I am planning on placing another stiff HSS 10x5x1/4 beam fully on top the (e) 6" cmu wall, and connect...

Analysis of Closely Located Point Loads Over a CMU Wall

Thank you all for the opinions. I like the idea of treating the cmu wall as a beam. I think I will utilize that. -There is no opening on the wall. In the real case there is a beam sitting on the existing cmu wall applying 12kips of total load , there is a column at 4 ft left and right of the...

Analysis of Closely Located Point Loads Over a CMU Wall

Hi Folks, I am working on a boxed shape wood framed house. Its foundation/retaining walls consist of 8" solid grouted CMU walls at all 4 sides. The house owner is adding a floor for that reason I am verifying the additional compressive stress over the CMU walls, and the existing soil bearing...

NDS Yield Limit Equations Table 11.3.1A

Hi Folks, I have a really simple question but I just need some kind of justification about it. I have 3x sill plate, and I am connecting it to a HSS beam with 5/8" dia. welded stud bolts, and my shear wall is sitting on that 3x sill plate & HSS beam. I am simply specifying the spacing of the...
