Complete penetration weld Vs Full penetration weld

Thanks folks, pretty clear from AWS A3.0... I don't remember where (or from who) I started using that term but I've had them in my head for about 15 year. I have to try to unlearn that now! As well to clarify (after re-examining AWS A2.4), it does seem as though not specifying weld size for a...

Complete penetration weld Vs Full penetration weld

Hey folks, I've always described a full depth partial penetration weld as a "full penetration weld", which is distinctly different than a complete penetration weld where back gouging is required. Are the terms Full penetration and Complete penetration completely interchangeable by code? i.e...

    Concrete Rebar Placement Drawings

I have required and reviewed many shop drawings of rebar. As was said, it depends on the complexity of the design if you think you NEED it. If its a simple foundation, then probably not. But there is always something to be said for reviewing the rebar drawings anyways to make sure that there...

    Structural question related to ASME?

Hey folks, bit of an odd question here: Is there a part of the ASME standards that relates to structures and structural design (akin to AISC)? As well, is there any discussion therein relating to material selection strategy for supporting structures? The reason for the question is that the...

Trying to understand Von Mises a bit better

Fair comment - and funny story to boot. We put in a proposal for our guys to do the work, however the client decided to save 20% and go with the other guys...

Trying to understand Von Mises a bit better

Thanks for the replies. some were halirious. I am glad that others can appreciate my frustration and surprise to finding out these new laws of engineering. I've also discussed with our FEA experts and they basically said all the same things. On related news, it turns out that i am not...

Trying to understand Von Mises a bit better

The analysis was completed in SolidWorks (COSMOS) using all solid elements (28 noded elements I believe) which would be subject to full triaxial stresses. I've attached (I think) the excerpt from their report explaining von mises stresses... it just seems off to me. I am going to send it...

Trying to understand Von Mises a bit better

A little while ago, we contracted a small local FEA company to give some assistance with a solid FEA analysis we were carrying out. The contractor had made the statement that the material will begin yielding upon reaching sqrt(3)*Fy or 1.73 * yield strength of the material under a generalized...

    Pin routing of cracks?

KirbyWan, Thanks... that makes perfect sense. pin-routing. its quite literal! I assume that the bit (1/8") would be some kind milling bit that would be typical for side cutting and not a typical twist bit that you would use for plunging?

    Pin routing of cracks?

Hey folks, sorry to hijack, but - can someone describe pin routing for me? thanks

Alternate welding method for stud welding

Well folks, it turns out that the fabricator does have nelson stud welding capabilities & procedures, and this was all just an excercise in trying to frustrate me. Thanks for all the input ppl, I may follow this up a little bit for future record.

Alternate welding method for stud welding

Would that typically be for mild steel of the 60ksi (A307) variety i wonder? I cant see that working for 120ksi heat treated studs of the ASTM A449 variety...

Alternate welding method for stud welding

Hey folks, Just looking for some input on using an alternate method of welding studs to plate other than 'conventional' stud welding. I am assuming that the stud can only be a mild steel which will limit its structural performance if it is welded to plate via a complete pen weld by pencil...

    Duplex 2205 Friction

Hey folks, (not sure if this is the correct forum but...) Does anyone have friction coefficients for duplex 2205 on duplex 2205? I suspect that I am going to have to run a few tests to determine it, but some preliminary guidance would be nice. thanks DRW
