    Since I posted the original message we determined the cause of the flange leak was excessive stresses imposed by the inlet piping. The piping has been redesigned and the flanges refaced. We haven't had a problem since.

    Grab a sample and have a lab analyze. They can tell you what it is. If the temperature is right at this location then sulphur could be condensing out. The melting point of sulphur is somewhere around 300F. Dpearcey

    Thx for the info. After considerable discussion in-house and with metallurgists, we settled on a 400 F bakeout for 2 hours. A colleage later showed me minutes of a NPRA conference where a refinery specified 450F for 2 hours for wet H2S service (1/2" thick material).
