Seismic Design for helipad on roof top

I am designing a rooftop helipad in a high seismic region in the USA (California). I have the gravity design loads figured out but I can't seem to find a suitable lateral system to determine the seismic coefficient. The helipad is on a rooftop and I am only responsible to design the helipad. The...

Buckling un-braced length of uniformly loaded axial member

Hi all, I did a search and didn't find any discussion so I'm starting this new thread. Hope I'm not creating a duplicate topic. For buckling un-braced length of a column with point load at the top, it is clear that the un-braced length equals the length of the column (assuming pin-pin top and...

    Gypsum shearwalls in SDC D

OP, I don't know which code section prohibits gypboard from being use a shear wall. I have used gypboard as shear wall. it was for a small freestanding office space inside a large warehouse so the gypboard walls over metal stud is my lateral system. Like hikeandgolf mentioned above, the R is...

HVAC Unit anchorage on concrete roof - use Overstrength?

OP, I believe ASCE7-10 supplement no.1 controls the design. We do a lot of anchorage projects in California for hospitals (OSHPD. OSHPD reviewers always comment if we don't use omega so I think the correct way is to apply the omega. Regards DS

Unistrut P1000 (or other) esr report

OP, Has the jurisdiction commented on the need for ICC report yet or are you doing this preemptively? We do a lot of cable trays, ladder racks, and such here in California for OSHPD jobs and they usually don't questions the capacity of the structs themselves. They mainly comment on the bracing...

ASCE7-10 wind load on canopy at ground floor of a 40 feet tall building?

Hi All, I did a quick search on this but can't seem to find an answer. I need to determine the design wind load (uplift pressure) for a canopy attached at 7 feet above ground floor to a 40 feet tall building. I am designing the canopy per chapter 30 of ASCE7-10 for roof overhang. Which...

    Hilti anchor

So you are not concern with seismic for this equipment anchorage? If you are, go with Hilti-KB-TZ. The KB-III does not have the approved ICC report for concrete use for the new ACI code. Here in California, we always use KB-TZ for concrete, KB-III is strictly a masonry anchor now. Another...
