I am asking this question for PT999 as well as myself. PT999 has posed a similar question at thread507-167093.
Can an existing 15" wide flange erected in 1907 be field welded to a new A992-Gr 50 wide flange?
What material would the 1907 beam be composed of?
Thank you ...
How large does this coupon need to be?
I intend on welding the bottom flange of a 15" x 60 plf section erected in 1907, to the top flange of a new section to create a built-up section for an existing facility.
SlideRuleEra, or other,
I just found more from an apparent specbook accompanying the blueprints:
Floor joists: 3x12 sound #1 pine joists and 2x12 sound #1 hemlock free from shakes.
What might the term "sound" refer to? Actual?
Thank you ...
Actual 3x12 floor joists at 16" oc for the second floor of a former firehouse wanting to turn restaurant and banquet hall.
Where can I find design values and a reasonable assumption of species for this structure built in Door County, Wisconsin in the year 1907? Keeping in mind, the lumber is...

I recall approximately ten years ago, when a PEMB company (specifically ABC) had changed their rigid frame base plate anchoring from two anchor bolts to four anchor bolts. Apparently for some time, the two were acceptable. I do not recall whether the change was a code requirement or revised...
UcfSE - Can you give me an example of a horzontal stiffener where the brick angle connects to the web? I suppose you could have a horizontal stud member contained within the box at the elevation of the connection. What other idea might you have? As far as a vertical stiffener, I'm imagining...
What about display shelfs in churches or other areas of aethetics, such that, due to the design parameters, such as size and location, which would render the space as uninhabitable, it may be obvious that it would never be used for storage or mechanical. Consider classrooms being 40 psf. Would...
IBC does not list minimum live loads for mechanical, equipment or display mezzanines. IBC 1606.2 states to include fixed service equipment dead loads.
After equipment loads have been considered, what do you use for overall live loads, for the above specified commercial occupancies?

I forgot to add. My firm does not do residential. Is there anything in any code, regulation, ordinance, etc, that would allow 1/2", non-corrosive finished, sill anchors, for fastening preservative treated wood to concrete foundations, for commercial structures?
Thank you...
Thank you SlideRuleEra for your reply. The reason I ask, is because for several years, the contractor I work most closely with, has been wanting my firm to conform to the other architect and engineering firms that they work with. Those other firms have been specifying 1/2" anchors (w/o...
Is there was a requirement, in IBC, stating that when fastening preservative treated wood sills to concrete foundation, the anchors must be of corrosion-resistant material such as galvanizing or stainless? I thought there was and I cannot find it.
Thank you...
