I would suggest going only for customised databases rather than pre-prepared ones. By customising it,you will also be able ot make your DB far more flexible, allowing for any kind of future procedural changes in your company.

what is the approx. file size of each drawing? This will play a crucial factor.
I would not suggest tar as an utility for compressing the files.
