Controling Location of Tapered holes ?

I would use gage balls to determine axial the location of the taper and runout (like your figure 2) to control the radial location.

Exporting a surface model as an stl

Kevin, I think closed VOLUME describes it better. The stl file is then a list of triangles that make up the surfaces of the closed volume. Thanks for your input.

Exporting a surface model as an stl

StrykerTECH: Solidworks will only take dimensions .00000394in (0.1micron) and larger. I did try using a very small thickness and it still creates seperate surfaces for the inside and outside of the cylinder. This causes problems with software that this is imported into. Kevin: I have tried...

Exporting a surface model as an stl

Save As- Yes. I get an error "The file could not be saved because the part's geometry is not valid for this type of save operations." What version of SWX are you running? Which surface feature did you use to create the surfaces?

Exporting a surface model as an stl

Updraft, Thank you for taking the time to reply. I am well aware of the difference between a solid model and a surface model. However, for what I need to do I must have an STL file with open geometry, think of a cup where the cylinder and the bottom are just surfaces i.e. zero thickness. It...

Exporting a surface model as an stl

Anyone know the trick to export a surfaces only model to stl file format in Solidworks?

    Assembly Drawings vs MPI's

The company I currently work for has been doing fully exploded assembly drawings for years. All assembly information is contained in the drawing. At my previous job it was detailed MPI's with lots of pictures and NO assembly drawings. Other engineers I know do mostly assembly drawings that are...

    "Bright" Nickel Plating

I came across an old print (circa 1983)that calls out nickel plating as "Bright Nickel Plate .0002-.0003 Thk." Our materials manager is asking what type plating do we want. The part is a 1015 steel shaft that runs through bearings so the O.D. need to be tightly controlled, but it is also...

Hertzian Contact Stress and Material Hardness

Gerry, Thank you for the reply. If I understand this correctly the case with a mild steel race will deform the same amount (and thus the same stress) as with a hardened steel race but when the load is removed the mild steel race is left with a dent because the stress > yield strength. The...

Hertzian Contact Stress and Material Hardness

I am designing an assembly which will incorporate a Maxwell Kinematic mount (3 balls, 3 V-grooves). The balls will be sapphire and the V-grooves some type of hardened SST (440C perhaps). The basic Hertzian spherical indentation equations use the Elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio to calculate...

Suitable replacement for hard anodize on aluminum parts

In response to your questions: 1) Yes the type III is sealed. 2) The product uses a capacitive contact sensing system which is particularly sensitive to grounding issues. Large pieces of metal which are "floating" electrically cause problems. The EE's didn't want to rely on threaded holes...

Suitable replacement for hard anodize on aluminum parts

We are using hard anodize for corrosion resistance. The limited research we've done and discussing the issues with the plater led us to choose hard anodize. According to the plater the increased thickness of type III is what gives it better corrosion resistance compared to type II. Weight and...

Suitable replacement for hard anodize on aluminum parts

Thanks for the input. If the coating is thin enough and conductive there won't be a need for masking.
