    Fatigue from platform motion

Haven't done this in a while. I have 10-year and 100-year accelerations and wind loads, but I'm not sure how to translate that into cycles or account for cumulative damage from cycles at lower accelerations. In other words, should I be using some sort of statistical distribution (I have a dim...

How many hours do you work per week?

Oil & Gas Mechanical Engineer. Large US consulting firm. Last job was 50+ hrs/wk management position no OT compensation, no bonus. Definitely was being taken advantage of. Currently work 40 hrs/wk with some paid overtime when necessary. I would guess average is not much above 42 hrs/wk...

Running Autopipe analysis in CAESAR II

I will try this and get back with you. We made an effort to do this 3 or 4 years ago and it didn't work out. I don't know the details because the people involved in the effort are gone.

Running Autopipe analysis in CAESAR II

    I meant Autoplant.

Running Autopipe analysis in CAESAR II

I am being forced to use Autopipe for some projects because the project managers think it saves time to import the Autocad model. If only Caesar could import Autocad files, then it would kill the arguement. If I understand you correctly, it seems that I can import from Autocad to Autopipe...

Another B31.3 Pipe Stress Analysis Question

My intense interest in the subject impelled me to knowingly participate in the skyjack. On the original topic, I am a buzzard coming late to the kill, in that I can add little to the excellent advice you've been given so far. You've already read some piping design books. Peng's book is...

Another B31.3 Pipe Stress Analysis Question

I understand now. The issue of nonlinear supports has always bothered me. Typical beam-type pipe stress programs cannot handle them very well, and in fact on many models I have had to remove gaps and/or friction in order to get the solution to converge. I know that I have taken a step further...

Another B31.3 Pipe Stress Analysis Question

If I understand the discussion correctly, Zippy is concerned because the code does not address yielding in equipment nozzles. I have several points to add. 1) B31.3 governs the piping system. Component loads are to be evaluated in accordance with their own codes, such as BPV Section VIII, API...

    Weld X65 to X52 - shadow in x-ray?

The issue turned out to be the wall thickness change at the weld. If I order a fitting such as a reducer, I specify the bore at each end to match the pipe, and typically leave the wall thickness and transition details to the fitting manufacturer. If I need to specify a transition, such as for...

    Weld X65 to X52 - shadow in x-ray?

I have a pipeline project that involves welding some X65 pipe to some X52 fittings. The bore is the same, and these are both S-1 materials. One of my client's inspectors commented that there may be a shadow on the x-ray that will prevent him from seeing flaws. I got this 3rd hand, so I'm...

    Pressure Vessel Code Book

Not magic, but it was spoken of with such reverance on this and other forums that I had to see for myself. I would now recommend Peng's "Pipe Stress Engineering" over the Kellogg book. Both can be found on Amazon or the like, as Kellogg's book is recently back in print for around $25.

    Pressure Vessel Code Book

Thanks LSThill, but I obtained a copy of Kellogg's a couple of months ago.

    Pressure Vessel Code Book

This is starting to look like my search for Kellog's "Design of Piping Systems". It only took me four years to get a copy. The PTB-1 document looks good, if I can get the company to buy it.

    Pressure Vessel Code Book

Excellent. I have one person here to ask, and I can also search the office of a dear departed friend.

    Pressure Vessel Code Book

TGS4, Can you be more specific? I have access to every edition of the code back to 1989. Is there something that is called, "Criteria Document" or is it contained in a part or appendix?
