Anybody know of any books/software that does friction loss calculations - looking for:
- basic 'sump to pump to process' pumping system - no multiple nodes, simple piping.
- methods of calculating losses for mining slurries, paper stock, viscous liquids.
Currently I use the cameron hydraulic...
Interesting application.
I don't have your answer, but what is the pH? If neutral, why not consider high-chrome iron slurry pump?
How are you sealing the pump - seal or packing?
10 feet of head is constant, independent of SG. If SG is 0.5 or 2, head will always be 10 feet.
PSI will change, dependent on SG. PSI = feet x SG / 2.31
this is a bad design, but still if 2 pumps have to be run at once - you have to test them out first. If this is only at the design stage - don't build it this way.
For testing - be careful. Check pressure, flows and vibration readings. If you see any problems on testing - they will never...
the guy with the minimum trim and over priced - he offered larger pumps, and had to trim to minimum trim to decrease the pump capacity to meet the target flow.
This is just a pump sizing issue - the larger the pump, the more it costs. The smaller trimmed impellers are needed to meet the flow...
Some options to check out:
- does the pump supplier offer a flow inducer to reduce NPSHr?
- investigate a larger size suction pipe to reduce friction losses, remove any screens on the suction line.
- install max sized impeller, and use VFd to slow down pump
- insure you are operating on the pump...
I'd also recommend a mixer. A pump with mechanical seal - the seal would have to be a double. Not too many little pumps have this option. Also - won't there be little metal filings after a while? If so, a seal won't hold up long.
increasing the pump efficiency only works for the very select few pumps that operate at BEP.
The majority of pumps operate off of BEP, so increasing the pump's efficiency offers retalively little in comparison to optimizing one's system performance. Far more savings can be made by tuning in...
There are unethical companies that look for unemployed engineers, that pay crap, looking for a cheap deal, a cheap stamper.
Also, there are unemployed engineers that will take these jobs, as it is a step better than being unemployed.
The bottom line lies with the % of unemployed engineers that...
moltenmetal: that is correct that engineers need better organization as a group. Unfortunatly, here in Winnipeg we have APEGM, which acts more like big brother constantly peering over your shoulder, rather than actually contributing to the growth of a positive image to the typical manufacturing...
Volunteer service -
Technical service examples:
writing technical papers for publication
technical presentation at a technical event
serve on some board
mentor a student
(some of these might have merrit for some, I suppose, but absolutly nothing to do with my career goals or current...
At 40 years old, I now realize I will retire at 65 and probably live at or just above the poverty line - if I keep going at my current job and live in this same city. The only way I will fix this is to move into management and away from engineering.
My younger sister went into nursing and on...
Here in Manitoba, to get your P.E., one has to do 32 hours of volunteer work over 4 years. The local P.E. licensing board is more like big brother constantly peering over your shoulder, than assisting in career developement.
Do any other areas force volunteer hours to get your P.E.?
I cannot...
