I will push back a bit as well. It is one thing to point out EM's uninformed takes (this bridge for example or his cave submarine or even the highly improbable view that we will ever live on Mars). But he has a degree in physics and is also a programmer and a gamer so being all those things...
It only took me about 20 minutes to scan the US coast on Google Maps looking at shipping yards and bridges. Neglecting channel depth I didn't see more than maybe one other bridge that would rank higher than the Baltimore bridge as a priority for protection. When you consider the width of the...
A risk matrix provides the opposite of a "black and white" assessment. Unfortunately, this structure was not protected against the most critical and obvious eventuality, one with the most devastating consequences, and the one with the simplest and cheapest protection method. A failure on all...
The bridge and pier, as un-intended as it was for that purpose, stopped the ship. It follows that there is really no reason and no excuse for this tragedy considering our understanding of infrastructure protection. This is an event that simply cannot be allowed to happen.
A simple risk matrix...
Hi all.
Sry for off topic but I wanted to confirm. I don't see a thread for the latest Crimean Bridge incident.
I think it is a pretty interesting forensic puzzle since there are conflicting stories as to the cause (from below or from above) and there are several videos and photographs that...
I'm back stateside and doing more roof and crawlspace inspections than usual. I'd like to formalize the site inspection hazard assessment paper trail and wonder if anyone can recommend a solution. I've developed various forms over the years but I'd like to circle back and see what is available...
What is your experience as to whether an EIFS system, in general, is repairable or not. For example, if the EIFS had to be stripped off down to the substrate (plywood/osb), could the substrate be prepared for reuse or would the substrate also need to be removed and replaced?
I am looking at a...
My experience is that the rescue team will be getting daily updates to aerial photography through Pictometry. It may be flown privately or by a commercial source but access to this new imagery may be limited during the declared emergency.
Shoring the building is not an option. No HUSAR team would risk lives to shore an empty building for the sake of evidence of unknown value. And who would survey the building and what engineer would approve the plan when no-one is sure yet what the cause of collapse was? And what engineer would...
I served with a USACOE USAR task force as a structural engineer for several years and although I did not respond to anything quite like this, I can tell you that it can take much longer than you might expect for a full USAR team to mobilize other than a small advance recon team. I recall that...
This documentary was posted to YT. Many more perspectives of the blast that I hadn't seen before.
Edit: Now that I look around I think all these have probably been on YT for awhile now.
That is an MSE wall (mechanically stabilized earth) with a veneer of segmental blocks pinned to the face. The blocks are not structural per se.
Edit: Here are some photographs of what looks like a similar failure.
Edit: Actually my link is a different system.
