The 1952/54a ASME Section VIII Unfired Pressure Vessel Code (technically not Div 1 because it was, in fact the only "Division" at the time) listed A285 Gr. C to have an allowable stress from -20 to 650 F as 13750 psi.
I will elaborate, as the particulars appear in the 2010 edition and were not in the 2000 ed:
" ... Reuse of a gasket is generally not recommended. One
current exception is large, grooved metal gaskets with
facing layers (see Appendix C) that are reused in some
instances after having been...
I suggest not brushing off the ISO 13725 Tech spec. The analysis has been done already:
This Technical Specification specifies a method for the determination of buckling load which
- takes into account the complete geometry of the fluid power cylinder, meaning it does not treat the fluid...
I haven't been closely following this thread, but maybe this will help.
Have a look into:

For what it is worth:
In Structural Analysis and Design of Process Equipment - 2nd Ed - Jawad and Farr:
On page 312, there is a worked out example of the same calculation sheet, with different numbers.
There H'Gy = 443,496 & Wm2 = 619,186
Without looking at it more, this would imply that the...
The simplified hand methods (ie, Kellogg, Grinnel, ...) all use differeing assumptions and estimations and are all just approximations.
See the attached graph outlining differing results taken from "Introduction to Pipe Stress Analysis" - Sam...
Slightly offtopic, but interesting trivia nonetheless:
Expanding on Compositepro's observations:
One of the big reasons why cork is so useful in making stoppers for wine bottles is that it has, essentially, a Poisson's ratio of zero. That is, when the cork gets squeezed into the bottle, there...
I am in Edmonton, and I believe your colleague is confused, unless there is more to the story - if this fitting is really as simple as you imply, you can use higher allowable strength materials for Category H fittings. I deal with ABSA quite a bit.

Where abouts are you located? For this application it would be most appropriate to talk directly with your jurisdiction/AI.
