Hi, is anyone familiar with AISC's Detailing for Steel Construction publication and knows how relevant it still is today? This is the third edition and was published in 2009. There is a ton of useful information that contextualizes typical steel details, but I am wondering if the industry has...
I am basing that off of keeping the deflection at the high point to 1" (which I am iffy about because I feel like that still applies a significant thrust to the columns). The roof is 4:12 slope and has concrete tile roofing, so heavy dead load.
XR250, you are correct. The flitch beam is actually not working out. It looks like the only way to make a structural beam here work is to use a steel beam and it would need to be an 18x40 :((
Time to tell the architect its either structural steel or rafter ties.
I'm making the decision to go with a kinked flitch plate beam. Detailing a tension ring is NOT easy, like KootK said, and if I forego the tension ring, I don't like the permanent thrust on the masonry columns. They are large, but are still highly stressed and analyzing them in biaxial bending is...
Unfortunately structural steel is not an option, but what is interesting about this project is the architect wants 2'x2' masonry columns. So I was also considering something like attaching the hip beam to the top of column in such a way to resist the thrust and strapping the tension ring beams...
Yeah I was having trouble finding strong enough screws for the thrust, which is somewhere in the 6-7 k range. Not to mention I'm not sure how to think about the load applied to the screws in that application. They seem like they would be simultaneously loaded in shear and tension.
I saw your...
Hi y'all,
I have a 24'x24' stick frame pyramid roof with vaulted ceilings on an exterior ramada. There are no collar ties, so I plan to take the thrust out with a tension ring. I have scoured the existing threads on here about the design of this type of roof using diagonal hip beams and a...
Hi all,
Has anyone used the Enercalc masonry column module and can help me to understand how it calculates deflection? I am designing a cantilever masonry column taking lateral load and the deflection for a 13' tall 2'x2' column with 500 lb wind load at top is 13" ?? And enercalc provides no...
