low ferrite in weld of Duplex steel

I have had the same issue welding cast CD3MN material. While the HAZ and Base metal were both at 50% ferrite the 2209 weld metal would not provide a ferrite above the 30% minimum. We tried a stepped solution anneal, dropping from 2150F down to 1800F prior to quenching without success. I went to...

    Spectrometer

We are looking to replace our aging spectrometer (spectro OES) and before just blindly buying the latest spectro model I would see what else is out there. I thought this would be the perfect place to get some opinions from those who actually use different models on a daily basis. We are a steel...

who the heck manufactured this valve????

You may be looking at the foundry symbol and not a symbol of the manufacturer. I would expect the manufacturers information with the part number and material grade. Bob

    1528 Steel Grade (?)

From the foundry perspective 1528 tells me it is a high Mn carbon steel. The Mn will be between 1.00% and 1.50% and carbon between .25% and .30%. That really does not give enough information however. The customer should specify some kind of heat treat and tensile strength requirements even if it...

How do you add N in steel

We add nitrogen to stainless using nitrogen bearing ferrochrome. Add it at the end of the heat. It tends to create a lot of slag as it melts in. It stabilizes austenite so it will change the austenite/ferrite balance in your steel. I have not seen other effects on the mechanical properties. Bob

    CD3MN weld ferrite

I am having difficulty achieving a ferrite above the 35% minimum as required in NACE MRO 103. I am using E2209-16 rod and solution annealing the weld at 2150°F. The last test I did had a ferrite of 35% in the cap but only 30% in the midweld. I am restricting the interpass temperature to 300°F do...

    Hardening problem

If I am understanding you correctly; the holes were drilled too large. The holes were welded up and now you are trying to drill through the weld for a smaller hole. You also did some other welding of a web to the flange. What filler metal did you use and what temperature did you preheat to? Bob

    Welding Processes

GTAW or TIG uses a small, sharp, non-consumable electrode and a shielding gas that keeps the arc very tight. This allows for less heat input into the weld and a smaller heat affected zone (HAZ). With the tighter arc you get good penetration into the base metal. A GMAW arc in spray transfer...

    Cooling diagram Duplex stainless steel

How tight is your ferrite range? You state that you need "50/50 A/F" structure but that's not realistic. The minimum solution anneal temperature is to make sure you break up any sigma and other nastiness in the microstructure. You can change the ferrite a bit by changing the temperature that you...

    exceed to range of WPS???

Dewe6 is correct about using a 1.5" weld test coupon, unless the material is impact tested. In that case you can run into a problem with the minimum base metal thickness. You would be restricted to 16mm minimum. Bob

    Valve Foundries

I can help you with WCB and CF8M but I don't know of any that make cast Iron as well. Bob

    Casting Capacity in US

I think I read in modern casting that casting suppliers are at either 80 or 90% capacity. I don't have the magazine in front of me so I could be wrong. That does not mean that domestic suppliers will not take your business but it does mean that you will be paying more as suppliers are only...

    Deoxidation for duplex stainless steel

I am assuming you are making CD3MN. We don't change the rigging for duplex stainless steel. Deoxidation is the same as our standard stainless steel. You don't need any kind of inert atmosphere. What are you starting with? AOD refined ingot or are you alloying up stainless plate? What was your...

    Solution Anneal for duplex SS

I would solution anneal the parts before welding as well as after. If you have some sigma in your as cast structure it may cause problems during welding. Bob

Welder qualification Clarification in ASME IX

I don't think he is trying to qualify the weld procedure using carbon steel plates. He is merely trying to qualify a welder on an existing weld procedure. I don't think you are reading QW-423.1 correctly. If you have a welder qualify using a weld procedure for P1 material on P1 material then...
