I do not mean to sound rude but to the OP, were you a terrible student? Do you live in the middle of nowhere or in some place with 20% unemployment? To even ask the question if you are being underpaid is comical. Of course you are being underpaid, you can go to any web site and put in your...

Mechanical Design Engineer
40 hrs maybe 4-5 times a year I will put in 45 or so.
No overtime, no reviews, no hope of advancement, but we do get raises pretty often and are paid rather well for what we do.

TheNextGen,
If the industry is old and the designs are old, and they are still able to make money, status quo will remain. If you would like to make innovative designs then try and find work in a new industry that is just starting to take shape.
I was listening to an interview with Mark...
OK I am 5 years out of school and do not like what I do. I can see myself yelling at the wife, kicking the dog and depressing my kids if I don't find something else. So what are some of these mystical jobs??? I volunteer for every special project at my current job to see if I could like...
Well in a previous life I did the initial security clearance paper work for clearances while in the Army for soldiers and I can add a few things.
Top Secret clearances are good for 5 years, secret for 10. If you have ever held a clearance before it is much cheaper to get it again and the cost...
Today's engineering is EASY. There I said it. It has been mentioned in this post how the quality of education has dropped but I say this is a supply and demand function. Not one of my friends that I went to school with (large state school been out 5 years) does any real difficult conceptual...
ctopher,
I know that now but had no idea then. When I was in college I worked at the university and next door to me was the office of recruitment and retention. They went to underprivileged schools to talk about engineering and related fields. Which is great. I am sure programs like that...
Good discussion. Latexman you are spot on and I never thought of education that way. I went into the Army for 4 years in order to fund my education. My wife is now 8 months along with my first child and I thought the first thing I would do is start a college fund so my child did not have to...
Kawh1,
There is not much you can do about what happened to you but you may be able to stop someone from making the same mistake that you did. Go to www.glassdoor.com and post about the company you worked for. You may have to do some work getting the company set up in their system, I am not...
"TenPenny, I see your opinion, however - and as shallow as this sounds - I put myself before this company. If my professional standards are not being met then I will correct that first, before tossing myself over the corporate hand grenade.
I agree from the client's perspective that the chart...
Also don't forget about the tax issue.
"If you work for an employer, 6.2% of your wages is withheld and your employer deposits the withholding, along with its 6.2% matching contribution, with the government for the social security programs. In 2008, the employee tax and matching contribution...
Swivel63,
"my confidence + your insecurity = my arrogance." I think I am going to have that quote framed and put on my desk.
Kenat,
"Is your cousin interested in things that are engineered, not necessarily the kind of guy that spends his spare time taking things apart just to see how they...
Kenat,
I think you hit the nail on the head. I am an arrogant SOB. I am sure the military did not help but I was an arrogant SOB way before I joined the service. I have tried not to be but this is just who I am. Put me in a room with a bunch of people that think they can rule the world and I...
Tick,
You are correct about getting battered around if you do not know what you want. I have had 4 jobs in 4 years and have just about driven myself crazy. I have come to the conclusion that I am a horrible engineer. I am always trying to change the world when it is not my place.

Okay,
I was always told to model at max material conditions and apply the tolerance as annotations. Obviously in order for this to work the programs would need to be able to interpret the annotations in the drawings and apply it to that feature. Rapid prototyping machines are not that smart...
