    Vibration dampening

I think that answers the real question....does vibration dynamics “scale Down”. I would think not when you look at small engines their internal are massive compared to larger engines.ive only blown one model airplane engine up to total destruction. It had a big load of nitro in it and it was...

    Vibration dampening

bifilar counterweights I finally found the name of what I was looking for. bifilar counter Weights weights or vibration damper. This came abou5 in m6 search for information on the P&w R 4360 aircraft engine from WW2. The engine had a nasty vibration and these counter weights. Now the...

    Manual machining 4340 steel.

I’m working on a major ) for) me project. It’s an 18 cylinder model radial engine. This is very similar to a 1/5 scale size P&W R 2800. These have been done before by others so the design is good. The machine work is very taxing as it’s small and lots of parts that fit together.the issue is the...

Career Advice for a Recent Graduate

Don’t be afraid to move around. I worked for oxford staffing for quite a while and got hired full time as a result. Often their positions are consulting and are temporary. But if you prove yourself to be resourceful you may become full time.

    4340 transmission output shaft

The out put haft on the sand buggy is still up in the air. The draft goes part way through a flanged piece of a cv joint. There is enough left of it that it could be cut down then bore the flange to fit. In the old days of drag racing we narrowed rear ends by doing this with axels then drilling...

    Machining soft aluminum, 6061-O

We a saw wax o our carbide table saw blade and the radial arm carbide blade for cutting all aluminum. The router carbide gets it too. The router we make roughigbcuts then do a climb cut finishing. This leaves a nice smooth finish. The saw wax is like a beeswax. It melts slightly as the...

    4340 transmission output shaft

Sorry I misspelled in my previous post. I have a double vision situation that makes typing extremely difficult. Anyway I meant roll forming similar to spinning sheet metal. This process was required in the project.it was very expensive as it required additional tooling. However it did survive a...

    4340 transmission output shaft

We are working with a similar situation on a sand buggy. Same material splined shaft. We have broken two of them spinning wheels then hit pavement do big shock load. One sheared right off just outside if the bearing. The other tore the welded part and a section of the hub out. This was...

    Blending Additives into Semi-Synthetic Oil

IRstuff, I now have a big mess, I not only spilled my coffee but I burned my morning toast and bacon after watching that video..

    Blending Additives into Semi-Synthetic Oil

A number of years ago it in the streetrod world was popular to ad various “zinc” additives to standard motor oil to preserve the flat tappet cam and lifters. I did this successfully for some time. Each oil change on my streetrod I would cut the oil filter apart just to look inside. For quite...

Welding qualification for aluminium 6061 materials

We manufacture custom trailers, mostly aluminum today. Most ultimately get loaded to the max and get beat up pretty badly. We use mostly tubing both for the main rails and crossmembers. This allows welding on three sides with out flush grinding the top sides. Production trailers are often...

Spot Facing a hole that is not accessable.

CWB1 hits it pretty close. I’d use a ball end mill or radius cutter so there wouldn’t be a sharp corner. Mill between the two holes, make sure the milled area is as wide as required for the spot face diameter. A very similar question came up in tool making class 40 years ago.

Rear window mounting on sheet metal body

We use 3m VHB tape to bond sheet metal skins on trailers. I surely would not want to use this on a glas or plastic window. It doesn’t come off and it it terribly good. We use heat and special knives to cut it to remove damaged panels. It is extremely hard to remove. For a window we use...

Tube sizing, Shaft dimensions, lobe dimensions, etc

I worked in the automotive field for a number of years. Some R&D and some system design. One person doesn’t do a car. One person may design door handles...period. There is a lot to a door handle. The art team give you what they want, you inturn give then what you can design mechanically, then...

What exactly is the phenomenon that occurs on a supercharged muscle car to make this sound at idle?

First reading into the original comments, it seems that the thinking is that these motors have a modern EFI. Not true. Here is the gearhead term for the condition in question. For many years it’s been called Detroit Roll. First I’ll hit on the race fuel injection then we’ll look at carbs...
