The recent construction forecasts for the building industry (not including transportation) I've seen have been rather grim for 2011 with little growth predictions until 2012.
Has anyone read any reports or heard of any areas of the country that are starting to grow in this sector...
Thanks for the input guys. I agree with all of your comments. Sadly this is where the industry has been headed.
My post, however, was not necessarily to discuss this issue. I was trying to get an idea of where firms are currently at with pricing. (Sq foot, % construction cost, etc) I found...
Recently our firm put together a structural proposal for a 30 story office, retail, mixed use high rise in the US. Total square footage is around 700,000 with about 100,000 of that being parking The structure is rather high end – Post Tension Floors, Concrete Frame, Deep Foundations, high...
Does anyone know of a quick table or chart that shows different lb/ft cacpacities of wood stud walls? Basically I'm just looking for a quick reference to use during conceptual design and project layout to determine if a specific stud size/spacing and wood type is feasible.
It would show 2x4...
This type of system is being used more and more. I'm seeing it on quite a few 3-5 story hotel projects. TSN has a product often used with hollow core called the sigma stud.
Download the construction guide at the below link. It shows some of the connection and camber issues you might have...
Seems like the concensus is getting a Master's Degree. It would be a good option assuming I could get the finances in order. Just can't sit around till August either though!
One thing I did do was take and pass the LEED exam so I am now a LEED AP. However, that markets to only a few...
Thanks for the tips. Grad school is a good option, but would very hard to get my finances to work and support a family. Plus, classes don't start till August which is a long time to sit around.
My work experience has been exclusively on the building side, but obviously I am looking outside...
Yes - the midwest is definitely one place that is doing some hiring right now. However, I'm located in FL which happens to be one of the worst markets for the construction industry right now.
Long term I will relocate. Just not an option right now.
I am a recently laid off structural engineer. My previous employer closed its US doors several weeks ago and laid off all remaining employees. The past few weeks I have spent networking and rigorously searching for a new position. Unfortunately the area I'm in is experiencing a tough time in...
I would tend to differ with your opinion. I don't believe the concept of using roof uplift for the leeward side of a parapet is 'logical'. I have had this discussion with many other engineers within my office and all think this system seems far too conservative and the logic behind it is not...
Per Section 6.5.12.4.4 of ASCE 7-02 two wind load cases shall be considered for parapet design. The first involves positive wall pressure to the front surface and negative corner zone ROOF pressure to the back surface.
The commentary describes this principle of using roof pressure as...
