In any design the question should not be "what is the reasonable, tolerance?" but "which are the design requirements?" and apply the tolerances accordingly.
For a 16" x 22" size plate the +/-.005" tolerance can be considered reasonable.

Did you considered using a Rodless Cylinder With Magnetic Cushioning. It has a magnetic piston & adjustable cushioning.
Search for it, it might work well for your application.
