    Catalytic Materials Recyclers

Hey folks, We're implementing catalytic technologies on our engines in the near future and I'm looking for US companies that reclaim PGM from spent catalysts. I've already run across Multimetco. Any other suggestions?

Diesel engine speed (rpm) sensor and display instrument

It was late when I wrote that. It should have said a hall effect sensor (in the flywheel housing) that reads teeth on the flywheel. Duh. Sorry.

Diesel engine speed (rpm) sensor and display instrument

Don't know how these small guys do it, but we use a hall-effect sensor that reads teeth on the crankshaft. I'd wager this is the same setup. Much more accurate than the alternator. Literally reading the position of the crankshaft and not the accesory drive belts.

    Typical SI Engine Misfire Frequency

Well, you've got to consider the relative importance of good combustion to a lawn mower engine and a modern automotive engine. Misfire produces unburned HC in the exhaust which will put you over emission certification limits real fast (if OBD-II triggers a fault for 1.5 times the limit at 1-2%...

    Typical SI Engine Misfire Frequency

I used to work with US OBDII systems in the mid 90's for one of the Big Three. Yes, misfire is detected by deviant crankshaft acceleration. The OBDII system required a code for a "Type B" misfire which would cause exhaust emissions to exceed 1.5 times the standard. It required cylinder...

    Diesel Engine Fuel Dilution

Yeah, there are a number of mechanical reasons for oil dilution. I'm just stuck in the development world trying to get aftertreatment dosing to work. That's why my answer was so narrow. As for the VW with oil dilution, it becomes a much bigger problem if your customers are are going 35,000...

    Diesel Engine Fuel Dilution

    Oops. Meant viscosity.

    Diesel Engine Fuel Dilution

You'll usually hear that none is acceptable, but realistically about 1% is liveable. The problem is that as the oil is diluted, is loses it's ability to do what oil is supposed to do, which means the engine will grind itself apart. Oil dilution happens whenever fuel actually hits the cylinder...

    Oxygen sensor and chip-tuning

Ooh, ooh! It's all coming back to me now (dang, I really need my sleep too so I can go to work in the morning. Curse you guys). Although I can't recall exact numbers, this is how it works directionally. There are really only 2 operating modes when it comes to fueling, closed loop and open loop...

    Oxygen sensor and chip-tuning

It's been quite a while since I've been involved in this, so maybe I'm dead wrong, but I seem to recall that the systems I worked with (US Big 3 EEC-IV) weren't really concerned about O2 sensor voltages. The actual parameter that was a concern was the switching frequency, not voltage. A 3 way...

Electronically Monitored Common Rail Fuel Injection

Once again, I'm in heavy on-road diesels and have only lab experience with CR systems, so remember the old grain of salt adage. Simplistically, an electronically controlled unit injector like we use generates fuel pressure with a plunger off the camshaft. Injection timing is accomlished with...

    Thanks. That answers my question.

    vacuum lines and egr.

ben91932 (Automotive) Dec 29, 2004 Yeah....that would stop the engine from detonating... and making power... and getting good economy.. and running cool.. Retune for no egr by retarding the timing and you will spend way more money on fuel than you ever would have on an egr repair. Is this an...

    Catalyst Control Function

OK, CCycle, if you've got misfire codes, get 'em fixed. However, he made no mention of them and he said that the car is running fine otherwise. I don't think there's a detectable significant misfire problem. And paying someone $150 to look around for something that in all likelyhood isn't...

    Catalyst Control Function

OBDII also contains misfire monitors to look for the level of misfire that can kill catalysts. Usually in the range of 1-5%. Your catalyst didn't die. It just wore out prematurely. Could be caused by anything from a tank of off-spec fuel to unusual driving habits to normal six sigma wear. If...
