    Does the bolt need to be a socket head? A standard hex head bolt or a flange bolt would help your situation considerably. I assume there is not much load going through this connection.

    I'm not sure what all your constraints are, but it sounds like you're describing a garage door opener. A garage door opener would be available chain driven or lead screw driven. Any reason this wouldn't work for your application?

    Probably a bad batch of screws, not uncommon at all. The self drilling tips are hardened, if the QC isn't there when it's manufactured, the screw becomes too brittle. Try ordering a different screw or from a different vender.

    My apology, I was thinking purlin. Its been a while since I've seen the detail, but for girts I recall a post going floor to roof at mid-bay - load from the top of the column had to make it though the roof diaphragm. Doing so allowed for use of cold formed girts.
