I think I will agree with MintJulep and hydtools that the best is to simply clean the gap and leave it empty. I would think tar is too rigid.

so basically in the submersible the motor/pump are together in a housing and the whole thing goes inside the sump whereas in the wet-pit type motor and pump are separated. I would assume wet-pit tend to be used for higher capacities.
