straight headed anchor bolts vs bent AB's

Does the shape of the bend have any effect on reducing/increasing pull out? It is reasonable to assume that a short semi circle or a short section at the end of J-Bolt will facilitate crushing the concrete and ease the pulling out. How about bigger bends? let us say converting the J-bolt to a...

Loading on 2nd Floor Concrete Floor

If you have high concentration of load on a small area where punching force is high then you may consider using some kind of bearing plates of appropriate thickness to reduce the punching force and help distribute the load in a safer way to the floor.

Question on value of force in structural calculation

For years I taught first and second year physics to engineering students. I thought I was overdoing it by trying to emboss the meaning of mass and weight in engineering terms into the brains of the students. Now I can see that you can never do enough to teach engineers about the proper use of...

Joists -- Hang Them or let them ride?

When joists run over beams; what is the difference in letting them ride on the beam or just hang them with joist hangers. What is the difference structurally and cost? I am not sure how expensive joist hangers are?

Ties between Piers and Grade Beam

What is the best way to tie piers to grade beams. Is it better to run the rebars from the pier long enough then bend them to run parallel with the rebar in the grade beam and use wire ties to join them together rather than use bent hooks between the pier and the grade beam?

    A lesson on tolerances...

There is a lot of journalistic fluff in the article and very tiny or no science in it. This is what happened when engineers/scientists read the news.

Retaining wall near a river bank

Why a 100 years? Is a 100 years long enough to be assured that the wall went wash off in a big specially with a foundation higher that the water level?

Serpentine Rock decaying into Clay/ Geotechnical research

The attached images are of a cylindrical core into an average serpentine rock formation I have on my project. I was cut using a coring bit. I chose an average location where I did not purposefully core in the hardest rock, I chose few soft surfaces to start the core and few harder ones. In all...

    Drilling Refusal Definition

Requested a quote for drilling piers in rock, the drilling contractor has pretty big heavy duty machines. My requirement for drilling is 3 ft in competent rock or drilling refusal. The drilling contractor refusal is when his drill does not go more than one ft in five minutes. Is this a...

Compaction Rate with a vibrating plate

The material to be compacted is mainly (80%) serpentine rock at various stages in its weathering. The material ranges in size from very fine spoils resulting from grading and drilling piers to gravel that ranges from 1/4" to 4". No top soil with organic material will be allowed in the mix. The...

Compaction Rate with a vibrating plate

Is it possible to reach 95% compaction with a vibrating plate? The compaction area is has to reach for big machines. Is it possible to have several runs on thin layers and achieve what big machine can do?

    Replacing circular stirrups with spiral

hokie66 You got it right, this what I was looking for, I have drilled piers with 4 #5 bars to be tied up at 9" OC -- the spiral with 9" (or less) pitch will do the job.

    Replacing circular stirrups with spiral

If the specification for stirrups is 9" O C what will be the pitch of 9 for the spiral replace the stirrups adequately?

    SKIN Frinction Help needed

I have the following Data. Borehole in rock with visible serpentinite presense, other kinds of rock exist as well drill refusal at 5 ft. The sample depth is 2ft to 2.5 ft (Blows per ft*0.63/Blows per ft) is given as >50 (blow counts obtained from Modified California Sampler were multiplied by...
