I was only talking about the saturated sample of granular material to get effective parameters of soil from direct shear test.

Thanks for the answer. I will try to keep the proposed moisture content of crushed stone within +- 2% of OMC.
I hope client will accept it. For wedging we use fraction 40-80,20-40 and 5-10mm.

Only simple advise.
I would also use the casing all the way down from the top to the bottom. Backfill your hole within the casing level and excavate again.We had better ground on our site but still had a problems with high GWL, including artesian.If your site is an industrial area...
