El-Tayem, Adel A.; Goel, Subhash C. (1986). "Effective Length Factor for the Design of X-bracing Systems," Engineering Journal, American Institute of Steel Construction, Vol. 23, pp. 41-45.

This is currently (10/21/24) a free download to all. If that stops being the case, or the link goes sour, please use feedback to let me know.

I'll try to expand on this periodically. I know there's at least a 2 part article on trying to use the tension brace as a "brace point" for the compression brace and count both, that's no longer considered valid, if you ask me, but it's from those two articles, let's say around 2000 which is when I recall reading them.

ETA:
Picard, A.; Beaulieu, D. (1987). "Design of Cross-bracings Part 1: Theoretical Study," Engineering Journal, American Institute of Steel Construction, Vol. 24, pp. 122-126

Design of Cross-bracings Part 2: Experimental Study - Picard and Beaulieu, 4Q1988 (PDF)

Discussion and Closure, Design of Cross Bracings Part 1, 2 - Picard and Beaulieu / Stoman, 4Q1989

Those are all engineering journal, and while there are no links, if you need them you should be able to find them via aisc.org. I can't find part two or the closure currently.

11-9-24 - Added a link from Jasmin at Ask AISC for the Part 2 article. Haven't confirmed it works, yet. Looks right. According to my lived experience, the search on AISC.org is just slightly wonky, especially if you know exactly what you're looking for, Yasmin suggested working off the Engineering Journal site for those articles published there as the search works better. https://ej.aisc.org/index.php/engj

Here's a bonus reference from Yasmin:
Wyczolkowski, Notes on Bracing Design, Engineering Journal, 1st Quarter, 1990

I'll have to check my printouts for the Discussion and Closure, I have it in my "inventory" but maybe I invented it. Next time I'm deep in the library I'll try to pull that binder out and see if it's a real thing or not.

11-10-24 - so it's a real paper, my print copy says 4th quarter 1989, it's just not currently on the EJ website, I contacted Yasmin. Also, added a direct link to the PDF (Viewer) for Part 2, since I thought maybe the discussion was bundled with Part 2.)
