VDI 2230 Systematic Calculation of High Duty Bolted Joints - Joints with one cylindrical bolt: 171 page dual-language (German and English) guideline for joint calculations.  This guideline covers calculations for assembly stresses, working stresses, alternating stresses, maximum surface pressure, minimum thread engagement, slip/shear resistance, and required tightening torque.  This is available from German publishing company Beuth at:

Bolted Joint Engineering by Tomotsugu Sakai: 270 page book published by Beuth.  Focuses on trouble phenomena, joint design, calculation, and inspection.  It has several examples of actual joints and their calculations.  Centered around automotive applications.  This is available from Beuth at:

Handbook of Bolts and Bolted Joints edited by Bickford and Nassar: 911 page book published by Marcel Dekker (now part of Taylor and Francis).  Sections are devoted to Material Properties and Selection, Fastener Processing, Threaded Fasteners, Design and Analysis, Assembly, The Joint in Service, Testing and Inspection, and Education and Training.  More information is available at:

ASTM STP 1236, 1391 and 1487 Structural Integrity of Fasteners: 188 page, 214 page and 159 page Special Technical Publications with contributions on Fatigue, Failure Evaluation and Criteria, Fracture Mechanics, Structural Integrity Criteria, Analysis Techniques, Testing Procedures, Effects of Environment and Stress Corrosion Cracking. These STP's are available from ASTM International at:

Guide to Design Criteria for Bolted and Riveted Joints by Kulak, Fisher, and Struik: 333 page guideline published by the Research Council on Structural Connections (RCSC).  This guideline focuses on the structural industry (building and bridges) and covers all aspects of mechanically fastened joints.  This is available from RCSC at:

NASA RP-1228 Fastener Design Manual by Richard Barrett: 95 page manual published by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).  This document contains sections on general design information, rivets and lockbolts, and a comprehensive summary and comparison of industry standards.  This reference covers the aircraft/space industry.  It is available from NASA at:

Modeling and Simulation for Material Selection and Mechanical Design, Chapter 6 Designing Fastening Systems by Christoph Friedrich: 122 page page chapter that covers the general nature of fastening systems, threaded fastener characteristics, design strategy, and design examples.  Available from CRC Press, part of Taylor and Francis, at:
