Drawing file size too large

Drawing file size too large

Drawing file size too large

(OP)
I have an assembly file with about 500 parts in it and the drawing file for that has blown to about 26 megs (MB) in size and ittakes forever to open and also just doesnt print. It freezes and I cant print the file.  I tried that from other computers too, but that doesnt help.

Now I converted that to a PDF which turned out to be about 8 Megs and for some reason I cant print that file either.
I am not too sure if it is my network or Solidworks.

RE: Drawing file size too large

If you can't print a PDF file, then I think it's your network. a PDF file (once converted) has nothing to do with SW.

A 500 part assembly at 26 Megs doesn't seem that bad to me.

What are your Assembly stastics say about your assembly?

What are your system specs?

Are you opening them up over a network?

If you are, then copy the files locally then and try to open it. You will see a significant difference.

Have you preformed routine maintenance on your computer (see SW FAQ in this Fora)

Run a search in this forum on this type of behavior (e.g. slow performance)

RE: Drawing file size too large

I would look at your Assembly Statistics as SBaugh has recommended.  It sounds like you have too many mates and parts in your top-level assembly.  You might want to consider using more sub-assemblies, and try to keep the number of top-level mates below 300 if at all possible.

I have an assembly with 595 parts (591 resolved) that comes in at a "lite" 11.7mb.  But I have 55 sub-assys, and only 22 top-level mates.  The drawing takes about 15secs to open and rebuild.

Thanks a lot Madmango, Scott I appreciate your help. I would say that ever since I have started looking up this discussion forum, life has been so much easier for me in terms of Solidworks querries.
