Beam Connection to Wall
Beam Connection to Wall
(OP)
It's sad to see three proj. engineers trying to do a structural calculation to check something. I need a quick refresher.
When a beam runs perpindicular to two concrete walls and is bolted to them, is it considered simply supported or cantilevered?
I thought originally simply supported but when you start looking at deflections and realise that the moment could be taken up in the strech of the bolts does it turn to simply supported?

RE: Beam Connection to Wall
If you take the simply supported case you will err on the safe side for your design ands thats how I would do it.

RE: Beam Connection to Wall
Simply supported or rigidly connected will depend on the configuration of the connection, it is possible to do either.
desertfox,
You state "If you take the simply supported case you will err on the safe side for your design..." That is not entirely true. It may be consrvative for the beam, but not the support. A rigid connection will transfer moment, not just axial load into the wall. This must be considered in the wall design.
