Another leaf spring question

Another leaf spring question

Another leaf spring question

(OP)
Hey guys, been reading through the forum archives and it reminded me of another leaf spring question I've had for quite some time.

Looking at the various leaf spring setups seen in the salvage yards (used to drive a Mopar = spent plenty of time in salvage yards) I saw some leaf-sprung suspension systems that put the moveable shackle in compression and some in tension.  What are the implications of going with either design?  (Assuming the spring is arched to a rightside-up "U" shape at rest.)

I figured the compression setup would want to have the shackle perpendicular to ground at rest because the spring will lengthen as it compresses.  I can't decide whether the tension setup would want a perpendicular shackle or not.
