Beginner to SW

(OP)
I'm sure these are simple questions, but I'm trying to learn SolidWorks on my own.

1) When I create a New Drawing, I notice my views are just
oulines or boxes of the piece part. In other words, I see no details in the views?

2) What do you recommend when you create notes (standalone
notes, not a note with a leader) on drawings? I've noticed that when you place a note on the surface of the drawing, it somehow tags itself to a view, so when the view is moved, the note moves with it to? My other option is to Edit Sheet, and then add the note…but by doing this, I am unable to see the views of the piece part. So how do I know where to place them? There must be a better way?

Is there any websites that offer SW newsletter or tips on using the program? I need every bit of help I can get.

Thanks!

RE: Beginner to SW

have you gone through the Online tutorial yet? If not you are better off if you do that first before making your own stuff.

1) Sounds like you inserted Empty views in.

2) That's because you have activated a view. When you do that, then yes it will stay attached to that view.

The question to you is how do you want to add notes? Do you want notes that stick with your views always, or not? If so activate the view (RMB - Lock view focus) and add your notes. If not "Lock Sheet focus" to the sheet and place your notes there.

When you edit the sheet your not suppose to see the views. It's because your Editting the sheet (Title block).

FYI - there is an FAQ page that covers a lot of questions your going to have. Like for example Websites - FAQ559-520

RE: Beginner to SW

You can definitely learn SW on your own--I did!

First, use all the resources immediately at hand within the program.  Go through all the tutorials first, even if it seems as though they teach things you won't need.  The methods will begin to become apparent in doing so.

Second, consult the help menu when you run into road blocks.  SW has great diversity of solutions, so if one way doesn't work, several others usually will.

Third, dive in with a practice model.  Pick something on your desk and try to model it.  Start with simple things and work your way up.  Consult help when necessary.  Forums should be consulted after a search through help, and are great for the more obscure problems.

To answer your particular questions. ..
Check to make sure you have an approved graphics card.  Go to the SW web site and follow links to system requirements and graphics cards.  Wrong cards cause improper screen displays and crashes.  This is crucial.  If it's not approved, you will have problems.

Second, check your line format display to make sure tangent edges are visible in drawings.  This could be part of the problem with your drawing views.

Also, I noticed you can now create an "empty view" in a drawing--I haven't yet used this feature, but you can probably create such an empty view to contain your notes that you would like to anchor.  Another method is to right-click on your sheet icon in your feature tree and click (something like) edit sheet format.  You can add the notes to your title bar or other areas of your drawing sheet.

Also, check the FAQs of this forrum for additional tips.
