Failure mode
Failure mode
(OP)
Hi, I was wondering how to solve this problem, could anyone give me a guide not the answer:
The quartz fibres have a yield strength of 10^9 Pa in compression and 10^8 Pa in extension. What would be the expected failure mode? Assuming a safety factor of 10, what should the minimum radius of curvature allowed for these bundles during installation?

RE: Failure mode
Is Young's modulus the same in tension and compression?
Can the fibres slip past each other on the bend. i.e do they work seperately or as a solid?
Is there any direct tension in the cable?
In general the manufacturer of the cable should supply the installation criteria as they will have considered all effects of any protective coatings and or layers/armouring.
Or is there some information missing from your question?
