Membrane Bio-reactor Technology

(OP)
I have heard of the Membrane Bio-reactor technology being  used in wastewater treatment. What excatly is it? How does it work? How applicable/appropriate is this technology to  rural communities? I kindly request anyone who has used the technology before to share their experiences.

RE: Membrane Bio-reactor Technology

A Membrane bioreactor is a variation on the activated sludge process which incorporates a membrane separation process for liquid-solid separation instead of the usual settling process (i.e. calrifier). Suspended solids can be removed completely and bacteria-free treated water produced. Very high levels of MLSS can be maintained and sludge age is usually much greater resulting in smaller sludge volumes.

Try Googling on MBR and you should get much in the way of information
