Hi all,

Does anyone know if the sulphur content of ASTM A101 would affect it's UTS in any way. The S range is 0.05% to 0.001%.

 Sulfur is present in steel in the form of inclusions, usually manganese sulfide. These inclusions have essentially no strength. They thus act as internal notches.
Their detrimental effect-they are never beneficial- depends on their amount, shape and orientation.
 I don't have any data on ASTM 101. What UNS or AISI grade is that?

ASTM A 101 is a Standard Specification for Ferrochromium used as steel/stainless steel alloying additives. There are high and low carbon grades.

Did you mean for the specification to be ASTM A 1011 instead of ASTM A 101?  ASTM A 1011 is a specification for hot rolled sheet steel (carbon, structural, & HSLA grades).  There is a huge difference if you are talking about ferrochromium for alloying or a final product like steel sheet.

Sulfur increases the machinability of steels, however it reduces the impact toughness and weldability.

Sulfur promotes hot shortness in welding, and has the tendency to increase with increasing amount of sulfur.
