Part numbers instead of "Ballons"???

Part numbers instead of "Ballons"???

RE: Part numbers instead of "Ballons"???

Create a blank note with a leader.  Use the link button in the property manager to link the note text to a custom property (P/N, descriction, etc.)

RE: Part numbers instead of "Ballons"???

To expand on rockguys post ... make sure you select the Component to which the annotation is attached switch when selecting the property to link. That way it will update to whatever part it is attached to in an assembly.

Also, when you have created the note, save it as a Block so that you can use it again in other drawings. If you need to add special notes to a particular block, simply click on the text & in the Block instance dialogue box which appears, select Attributes and add the special notes under the Value section.

Once the block is inserted into a drawing, it can be copied by holding the Ctrl button down while selecting the block & dragging to another location. Once the leader is attached to a part it will "adopt" that parts properties.

RE: Part numbers instead of "Ballons"???

We did it with the Excel based BoM.  The way we did it was to modify the template such that the Item Number column contained an equation.  So cell A10 (where A is the Item Number column) said somthing along the lines of:
=B10

...where column B is the Part Number column (that comes in with the components file properties).  We defaulted the ballooning to no circles, just the leaders, so the balloon number is actually the entire part number.  We got rid of the 1-10 Item Number scheme and just number by the part numbers.  All manufactured and purchased parts already have unique part numbers so why make add unique number 1-10 Item Number to the mix?

Seems like we had to play with the BoM properties to get SW to stop overwriting our Item Numbers.  And I believe we had to manually sort the Item Number column each time a BoM was inserted.  Kind of klunky but it worked.

Ken,
Do you have any idea of what your plans are when SolidWorks 2005 BOM is released? We also your formulas to control our excel BOM’s. I have no clue what we are going to do. To my understanding excel will no longer be supported after we install SolidWorks 2005.

If SW2K5 continues to accomodate VBA, and you have Excel, then you will still be able to use Excel via macros. See VB GetObject and CreateObject functions.

thanks everyone...it works, kinda a pain in the %#$*...but, hey, it works...is it a custom macro or a std macro from the internet that extracts the BOM data to put into excel???...

Explain please ... is what a custom macro???

If you are using the linked-note-with-leader to show all the BOM information, why are you bothering to duplicate all the information with a BOM? (or vice versa)

The old style BOM is an Excel spreadsheet.
The new style BOM info can be exported, in TXT or CSV format, via the "Save as" command, which can then be imported into Excel.

as in "custom"...i ment a macro that is very intense that you created from scratch, that only work with your aplication BOM...

and i am using the default BOM in SW for now...and i still can't find how-to export into .txt or .csv...thanks

I wasn't asking what "custom" meant, I was wondering what the "it" was in your "is it a custom macro or ..." question.

To export a TXT or CSV file, highlight the BOM table (in the graphics area) by clicking on the top row (it should turn blue) then do a Save as select the format you want & hit enter.
