Harmonics study

Harmonics study

(OP)
Does anyone know of a recent system study that analyzed the third harmonic and overall effects of converting to CFLs with different THD ratings (i.e. 20% compared to 30%)? How do figure out the threshold that when adding CFLs to the system, it will begin to have an effect (be it high netural current, flat-topping, or what not)?

RE: Harmonics study

what is a cfl?

RE: Harmonics study

CFL-Compact Flourescent Light- Some magnetically ballasted, some electronically.

Alphanaomega-I have not heard of any generic system studies. I think this is a problem that has be evaluated for your specific system, becuase it is highly dependent upon what kind of devices you are supplying. You may be able to find some general studies that look at specific components (i.e the effect for a system that supplies computer equipment vs variable speed drives vs regular industrial motors..etc)There are some software programs that will do this for your particular system, but this would be time consuming if you have a large system or you don't have a lot of information on many of your installed devices. What kind of system are we dealing with?

With CFLs nowadays being a commodity item, there’s probably not a lot of new work done on their impact to electrical systems.  You might be able to find archived studies in the US EPA of state energy commissions.  Another source may be IEEE Industry Applications and Power Engineering Societies.  CFL producers may have information specific to their products.

These may be are what you’re looking for—journal articles may be available through a college engineering library or for a price, online at ieee.org.  Street price is about $35 each.

RE: Harmonics study

cfl are high in harmonics i just don't know the exact amount . try contacting the lamp manufacture for that data.
